Grass' advantage over other types is not offensive prowess, but versatility, for example, grass types have a unique status (Leech Seed), ways of applying multiple statuses such as para, sleep, confusion, where most other types only get nothing, or one. They also get multiple draining moves and other recovery options, and then things like terrains, taking advantage of multiple weathers depending on the 'mon, the only thing they really lack are a 'default' coverage type, like ground to rock, water to ice, etc.
Ground or Bug would be the likely choice, but honestly Rock is probably my favourite, as it covers almost every single one of their foils. The day we get a grass/rock starter or pokemon that isn't Cradily (who is based) I will be happy, it could have been Chesnaught too.
