They sucked in gen 1 too. I'm tired of seeing Gen 1 brought up every time I complain about how much I hate how weird the designs are now because I didn't like it there either.
I liked the designs in gen 2 and gen 3 and then a small handful of gen 4 and 5 designs. There are some good gen 1 designs too of course but "Designs were shit back then" being used to excuse the shit designs now. Even in Gen 3 Blaziken is pushing it but it still has enough monstrous features to almost pass.
I cant even find pokemon clones that are free from this because all other monster catching games either lean harder on the bizzare, or arent really about catching wild monsters and more about like, characters you use as tools to beat the story based game in like SMT, Persona, Digimon, etc.
