I'd argue Pokemon GO as a concept is closer to the franchises original vision than PMD.
In spite of its faults, it doesn't shove muh deep plot in your face.
Even other spin-offs from the early days were generally simple.
Taking pictures of Pokemon?
Playing around with Pikachu?
Battling other trainers and playing mini-games?
Tetris?
Some people play video games for the experience (i.e. story driven games) or they play it for the arcade-like challenge (most games from 1972 to 1996)
Pokemon was made as part of the latter with it being unintrustive for the most part with the focus being on the challenge of collecting all the creatures.
