Only area that really made a strong impression was the Ruins of Alph in Johto (only in Gen 2). Incredibly memorable and eerie to me, but not sure how to put it into words. That said, I enjoyed my experience with Kalos, and had its routes burned in my head even years after I had played it for whatever reason.

You posted it.
Atmosphere demands a decent level of visual complexity. The 2D games ended before that complexity was reached.
For the 3D ones, even with the technical issues, Scarlet/Violet are the most atmospheric. Particularly in the evenings when the sun is low on the horizon, producing long shadows everywhere while its rays scatter through the moving clouds or the tree branches.

Area Zero is peak atmosphere in Pokemon games. Distortion World and Ruins of Alph come close though

SV overall was better than the rest of the series for being atmospheric (it is just something that comes naturally to most open world games) but Area Zero is the peak for the franchise for pure atmosphere by a wide margin

its really too bad GF opted not to just give the game the time it needed, it has really nice elements under the insane jankiness

Atmosphere is more than just visuals. Novels and conversations can have atmosphere as much as a 3d game. That said, SV truly nailed it with area zero. Keeping the area off limits until the end was the right choice and made the stunning visuals, music and special pokemon more impactful.

This and stuff like diving made RSE feel like a real adventure, other games try something similar but it felt like RSE kept actively trying to throw new locales at you versus other games only having one or two standout areas in the region.

There's a-lot of subtle things that make Kalos stand out visually, like the dramatic camera angles framing major routes or buildings and generally making the player look smaller. Neat use of color and lighting as day shifts to sunset or nighttime. You see more stars in the sky the further you get away from the city (less light pollution).

I like Kalos as well, whenever I replay it I feel like I'm going on a really nice vacation. The stretch between Parfume Palace and the rock gym is great, especially when you traverse the same route but at different altitudes and directions. I also love how the routes are designed to make you feel like the seasons are changing.

Speaking as an XY hater, Kalos, as a region, was actually quite great. Images like >>53459795 really captured my immersion while playing, it makes the whole thing feel like a grander adventure when you get cool shots like this.

Unarguably the first Pokemon Snap.
From there, maybe Mystery Dungeon RB or Colosseum.

In regards to the Mainline games - most have pieces that give a feeling, but they're generally restricted to small portions (Pokemon Tower, the Snow Routes in Sinnoh, etc.). Alola maybe has the most consistant atmosphere, so I'd probably give it to them if we have to choose one of the mainlines.

I can't remember seeing things like the sky or a sunset in Sinnoh at all, except for maybe a cutscene? It's mostly 2D view.

Depends on what you mean by atmosphere.
If you just mean having a consistent feeling and tone, then it's Hoenn.
If you mean the meme answer where it HAS to be somber or mysterious or sad feeling or something, it would be Sinnoh with it's constant piano tracks.

I think anon means stuff like the cutscene at Spear Pillar or some of the intro's shots, but those hardly compare to Unova's constant swishing camera in places like bridges or big cities. Sinnoh can definitely have a bit of credit but Unova absolutely kickstarted it for real.

I always liked the vibe of Johto a lot. If we're talking more recent games, PLA I guess. Both have a little more japanese vibe I'm a bit biased I suppose. SV did great with Area Zero I enjoyed it a lot but it's a too little part of the game.
