It's ingenious, when you think about it. Pokemon explicitly faint when you beat them in battle (not die), but that precludes you being able to catch them. Why? Because they lose control and shrink too small to be seen.

Teleporters, which the Pokemon universe has had since RBY. Your Pokemon aren't stored as data, they're teleported to an actual storage system and catalogued for your convenience through the PC.

They're teleported to some warehouse offsite. I know that sound sequally as silly, but it has actually been established already that teleportation is a thing in Pokemon, digitizing them, has not, its headcannon.

They shrank in the past too and at least showing them shrink is less lazy than straight up disappearing them off the sprite display window, like they did for opponent pokémon up until the jump to 3D.

Same place they store all your other Pokemon since they're stored in Pokeballs. It's likely that the regional Pokemon Storage System maintainer is also responsible for storing them. So in Kanto that'd be Bill.

I think a lot of the reason 'digitize' is such a popular interpretation is due to the anime turning the Pokemon into energy or whatever, you have to wonder why they did it like that, maybe because it looked cool and could create easy visual shorthand for sending out/recalling a Pokemon?

There are a lot of things that hint at digitization, the anime's Pokeball catch/return effects are just one of them. TMs and HMs being CDs is another example, it makes more sense to load in new data to a digitized Pokemon from a CD than whatever Gamefreak intended them to do.

He wasn't disproven though. That's how science works. Information gathered is tested by whether you can disprove that it's correct or not. Hundreds of years would have passed with this still being accepted as the case, so it's either correct or disproving it will take information no one has had so far.

Actually, TPC's policy (which applies to everything except the games developed by Game Freak) explicitly says that Pokemon are never data. The anime doesn't support that theory because it's forbidden from doing so.

for the same reason not every Pokemon with teeth can learn Bite/Crunch. Just because they have the capacity for it doesn't mean they know how to fully utilize it.

what if it is the pokeball that does the shrinking rather than the pokemon? Just like how a fruit doesn't cut itself when brought near a knife, the pokemon does not shrink when a pokeball is near it but rather the pokeball shrinks to pokemon
