Why do people want new types so bad? I don't think that GF will add any more, but if they did whatever it is would still be a lot better than the popular fan created ones. I'm not against the idea completely but the majority of fan types I've seen are just unnecessarily specific versions of existing types, and none of them seem necessary or useful.

Nah, unnecessary. Bird/avian-like attacks (Peck, Wing Attack, etc) are the physical side of Flying type, while wind-based attacks make up the special side. It makes enough sense as-is.

leave the rest as egg groups with Egg Abilities, like all fish-group mons get Swift Swim, or plant-group mons with Photosyntesis.

Poison attacks make sense only as Dark or Normal attacks with PSN status + Acid, which should have been SEffective against Steel.

How is Rock SE against anything ? A rock is like a heavy blunt hit. How is Fighting a type ? it's just a series of Normal (and Psychic ) attacks with high-critical hit or special effects and high power/accuracy.

It’s definitely possible to get into autistic categorization of types. There’s the elemental types (the “special” ones, Fire, Electric, Water, etc), ones based on physiology/body composition (Bug, Dragon, Rock, etc), and ones based on technique (Fighting, Psychic, Dark).
Bottom line, though, and what can open up an entirely different kind of autistic headcanon, is that even physical types have some sort of elemental energy associated with them; THAT’S why rocks can do more damage to certain kinds of Pokémon, and how Fighting types are a unique thing (attacking with a special skill using Fighting type energy).

Not every type needs a 100% accuracy non contact move, a generic blast and a stronger less accurate version of it ...etc
How is Earth Power different from Earthquake ?

Pokémon became too gamefied. What's wrong with Dragon being a boss rare type with unique attacks, or Bug being shit ? it added a sense of adventure and "narrative"

Most Physical types don't need to exist.

Rock beats Bug because it is heavy, and oversized insects would have frail exoskeleton and weak respiratory system (poison weakness in Gen 1)
Rock beats Flying again bc it's heavy, but also a projectile, perfect for frail birds.
Rock beats heat and cold bc it resist them.
Rock crumbles when crashed to metal.
Rock loses momentum when thrown underwater, and also fish mons can retaliate with a boulder-splitting water jets.

I am not saying Rock needs to be removed, but it has only 3 attributes: heavy, (projectile barely counts) , weaker/lighter than metal, non-conductive

Fighting moves could be like ice moves on water types.
To use your example, before Brock you could have had a Tutor or a rental high-Atk Normal mon with a super special Rock Smashing move.
This would teach the player that moves don't have to be STAB

Grass already covers plant Pokemon, as well as nature in general. Trees are plants. Wood comes from trees. Wood is therefore redundant. Type is both what a Pokemon is as well as what it does. Rock types are simply Pokemon that are rocks or are rock-like in appearance, or come from rocks such as fossils. Ground types manipulate the earth, causing earthquakes or digging through it, and tend to live in mountains/caves/deserts, etc.

The only type that seems even remotely possible / reasonable is Sound, because it already exists as a unique element with its own unique battle traits in game, but comes with two major problems:

1. Completely fucks over Special-based Normal types, because the only Special moves they would have left would be:
>Hyper Beam (recharge move)
>Razor Wind (charge move)
>Sonic Boom (it does fucking 20 damage)
>Spit Up (needs Stockpile to work)
>Swift
>Tri Attack
>Trump Card (gimmick move with poor distribution)
>the default versions of Judgement, Techno Blast (both signatures), Tera Blast (getting wiped after this gen) and Terrain Pulse (meant to be used on terrain)
essentially leaving them with a whopping total of two actual Special attacks to use, one of which being 60 BST.

2. Overlaps with a bunch of pre-existing Pokemon, abilities, and moves
>What happens to Sound-based moves that AREN'T Normal like Bug Buzz (ex: tons of Bug types rely on Bug Buzz for strong special STAB, which they'd immediately lose out on)? Do you just wind up with a bunch of Flying Press-esqe moves with dual types?
>What happens to pre-existing dual types that are clearly sound based? Do you remove Dragon or Fighting from Kommo-O? Dragon or Flying from Noivern? Electric or Poison from Toxtricity? Water or Fairy from Primarina? Fire or Ghost from Skeledirge? Etc.
>Does Liquid Voice just become Water-type Aerilate for Sound-type moves? Does Punk Rock become like Steelworker? What happens if Primarina / Toxtricity get type changes that conflict with these?

It seems like a whole lot harder of a situation than Fairy was. Most other common fan types can just be grouped into pre-existing types (Cosmic -> Psychic, Food & Light -> Fairy, Wind -> Flying, Technology -> Steel)

This, The train left for Sound the moment Fairy already went and took a cut out of Normals Niche in Gen6, at this point i would rather that Normal gets a meaty buff then that they add a new type that just poaches what it has left.

Anyway, i think the real reason people want new types is because they wanna redo Type Strengths and Weaknesses all around (*cough*Fairy nerf*cough*) and that they think that a new type is "needed" to justify it or make it obvious things have been changed up, which is why so many suggestions just end up feeling phoned in.

There's enough types as is. And aside from Fairy needing something like Bug resisting it... They're mostly balanced fine now. (I would like Steel to resist Dark again too though.)

The whole "Meta" and the complete abandonment of any feeling of lore and narrative turned pokemon soulless.

"Air" Sound attacks (not vibrations like earthquake) should be a more recognised attack type, defeating Fairy. Not everything needs to be a Species type AND an attack type.

on the other hand, Poison is barely justified as a type. It was supposed to be acid attacks used by mons with weird bodies that Fighters cannot attack comfortably (quills, gas, goo, serpentine body etc). But now it is like a 2nd dark type. The whole of Poison type can now become Dark types with weird body abilities that hinder Fighting types, with Dark and Normal attacks that bare a PSN effect, and nothing is missed.

Types are a relic from gen1 , from 1990s. You don't need a mon to be a certain type to VALIDATE its attributes.

I've had a similar idea to this concerning Bugs, only on account of the type being worthless offensively; something like Bug types using Bug attacks have Tinted Lens applied, or at least they're only half resisted

Every type having attributes like this could be interesting, but would best be explored in a spinoff game like Colosseum or Legends to make sure it wouldn't, like, become complete anarchy.

What of Flying types that aren't birds? Gyarados for example has classically relied on Bounce for any kind of physical Flying STAB. And its far from unique there, Gliscor relies on Acrobatics for example too.
Physical Flying Types need more than just Bird Moves.

Because people realized that 'adventure' thinking was retarded and made half the game objectively worse to use for no reason. While also severely limiting what the designers and players could do within it.
I can't think at all of any justification for neutering some types as you say. Especially because within even Gen 1 itself, Bug Types like Scyther were both very strong and rare, indicating that Bugs were not just shitmons, but themselves meant to be important and notable monsters to seek out.

Wind attacks used to be Normal in Gen1 , ironically. This makes sense as wind is neither hot or cold or acidic or anything, it is neutral. Wind attacks should be like a reverse Low Kick and depend on the enemy's weight.

Why would Bird moves defeat plants ? Trees resist high winds more than non-anchored animals. Or is it because a single bird species drills tree trunks ?

Birds defeat bugs only bc they are faster bigger stronger, this can be shown only using their Base Stats.

So we are only left with Fighting, which are merely stronger Normal types with somewhat higher SpDef. Yeah I guess an Aerial Ace kind of attack would leave a Fighter defenseless. But why ? Sure a Martial Artist mon would be overtrained in normal combat, and aerial attacks might confuse them. They would also be unprotected against whirlwinds, but as much as any other Normal mon. But all these can be described with Base Stats and Specialised attacks with certain effects.

Birds peck at seeds, woodpeckers peck into trees, etc.

Trees CAN resist strong winds, sure, but after storms with high winds, branches usually fall, and some trees CAN be uprooted after storms

The bird-like attacks are fine in Flying type, as it gives the type a larger selection of physical moves. Don't overthink it. Since the split, it's important to have both categories of moves in each type, and since bird=flying creatures, related moves make sense as Flying type.

Yes they will. You see people get excited over Bug/Dragon or Rock/Ghost every generation, well the hype machine needs to be oiled.

thats the main problem with the sound type, everyone wants it but theres no reason for it to be weak to/strong against anything. nearly every type matchup makes sense in the official games.

They can double the number of type combinations just by introducing some mechanic which makes the order of your types important.

I think a better solution would be more moves like Freeze-dry or thousand arrows, moves that have changed type matchups to more match the theming of said move. Like for example, sonic boom ignores ghost type immunity, as its supposed to be fixed damage, and a nod to 'sound type'. Solar Power could be super effective against ice types as well, since it gets boosted in the sun it makes sense thematically. This would be very overbearing to learn all these specific moves new coverage, what pokemon learn them etc, but its much better than adding a new type to the mix and fucking with the balancing.
