Pokemon's inability to show anything dark, remotely serious, harshness or stakes is a big reason why the games stories are in such dire straits. Everything is utopian, idyllic and cutesified. This turns any villain into a nonsensical one dimensional cartoon character that's not remotely justified because everything is already good and pure.
