Why did they do it so dirty bros? The best part is that they had a lot of opportunnities to make it a bit better to use but failed.

it's balanced to be an in-game surprise KO, which is why it's so fast and self-destruct has 200 BP (plus the whole defense halving thing). one of only a few Gen I Pokémon where it really feels like you aren't meant to use it at all, but for the sake of cohesion and the entire point of the game – gotta catch em all – it's available to you to catch and train, but it'd be essentially impossible to level it up using its intended gimmick since it kills itself every time

PLA did something interesting with these self-KO moves, incidentally, and it's a refreshing take on a stagnant idea

ditto is another one where the entire point of it is the element of surprise of a wild pokemon copying your own party, but the novelty of this event isn't symmetrical when you use it as your own pokemon

What? Self-Destruct basically lost Power(as did most moves) but instead deals 80% max hp to the user, nothing interesting about that.

not exactly. it's the move that has the most variety in terms of choosing between rapid/standard/strong style, since it has implications not just in terms of damage and turn speed, but also how much damage you want to deal to yourself. not just a question of removing the guaranteed self-KO but also providing variability on several fronts. this is not grand strategy, sure, but "interesting" is a pretty low threshold that it's weird you're only replying to negate the point. sure, fine, i'll never post again because you're nitpicking my post. not sure what you're getting at here

See, I came away from the impression the moves they'd added to Legends were what moves and effects they would naturally have or think of utilising ("Pokémon had an idea for a new move") which is why there wasn't a lot of moves from newer games - either they were invented/conceptualised in a region outside Hisui's vicinity or they had yet to exist anywhere. It would make sense for SD in the past to not be as violent or aggressive, because in Hisui, there wasn't the risk of Voltorb being beset by trainers all the time and given some humans looked after Lord Electrode and tended to him, they understood some were friendly. Even with entry hazards being damage-dealing moves with after-hit damage like Wrap or Bind and things like affection boosts and OHKO moves being absent speak to humans having an effect on the evolution (no pun) of pokemon movesets in the time of Hisui tot he modern day - SD becomes more destructive with a drawback of instantly dealing KO recoil, spikes now doesn't directly damage, but instead lays a trap for switch entrants, OHKO moves exist and pokémon try harder in battle for trainers they have grown a bond with all seem to have appeared because humans battling with their teams an seeking to gain any kind of advantage or strategy to succeed inspired the explosion of diversity of pokémon moves an the effects of those moves.

Give it Galvanize. It now has an Explosion with 450 BP, almost as high as its Gen 2 peak.

Remove Aftermath ("triggered explosion") as an ability. It's now a passive effect granted if you're KO'd while knowing Explosion. How busted would this be?

I think the ability should just have some bonus effects added. Like boosting the power of self-destruct moves and/or dealing more damage if the Pokemon has one of those moves in their moveset when the ability activates.

I've never used Kantonian Electrode, but the Hisui form was fun. With the speed and paralysis it was one of the most broken mons in that game.

It had - or would have had, if not for the item dupe glitch - a niche as a speed levelling tool for low level mons since you could have it switch in and explode to hand over full exp to the low level. Rare candy duping makes it a moot use, however.
