I don't get it. Did they literally just retcon this nigga out of existence? He literally had a Latios in the anime, and yet now the anime is showing a rogue Latios? Are there supposed to be multiple Latios or something?
I can believe that the movies aren't canon. But Tobias is literally from the main anime canon. I just don't get it desu.

Where is it stated there can only be one of any particular legendary Pokemon? Even in the games, the only indication is that you can get only one, which is true for a lot of non-legendary Pokemon, and that they can't breed most of the time, which is also true for some other Pokemon. Granted, some Pokemon are more likely to be individuals than species. Like, in RS it's comepletely reasonable to think the Latis might be a species, but the cover legendaries probably aren't, and the later lore about the Regis means there could be more of them. To pick an example from the next generation, while the cover legendaries of the Sinnoh games seem like individuals, HGSS shows that since Arceus made them in the first place He can just do it again if He feels like it, which again given the Regigias lore could imply similar things. This could also work for the legendary beasts given their Ho-oh origins, but as I pointed out in a different anime bitching thread (that bitched about the movies being canon, a recent episode implied that by the way) that the beasts were weirdly consistently depicted as individuals. Like, even HGSS puts Kyogre and Groudon in a room for poorly explained reasons, but the beasts are either near Johto or from another universe.

I like to think that Johto was a hub for different ancient cultures. Which would explain the Hoenn connections. A lot of people are autistic about the Pokémon world (the regions based on japan at least) being 1:1 with Japan but if we use gen 4 Johto as a guide then Sinnoh would be to the north with Sinjoh being a border region and Hoenn being to the southwest of Johto.

The weather trio do same to be species in the anime however. The Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza that have appeared in different episodes/movies don't all appear to be the same ones.

Using Kyogre as an example, there's:

It's certainly less stupid than the Cave of Being, which I consider to be the worst example of this shit. Yeah, sure, a region designed to be far enough away from every other region to the point of not having old Pokemon for most of the prequel game has a cave that is associated with Sinnoh. It's not even like the Abundant Shrine, which is clearly a place made by immigrants and much more flavorful for that reason. Like, the ORAS Hoopa rings are better, because even if they're not explained in game and are generic, it's at least believable if you know what Hoopa is and can do.

Supposedly, it was something as minor as Takeshi Shudo's contract stipulating that he had to be consulted before Movie Mewtwo appears in anything (and therefore, his estate now had that right). TPC likely just didn't realize the issue until after the movie started production and weren't sure if they'd have time to clear it up in court before it was time to start promoting the film, so they just changed Mewtwo's voice and called it a new character to be safe.

You say that, and yet there's the whole Mew situation. Are you saying that the Cinnabar Lab Mew escaped in the lore? I mean, there's no real reason it wouldn't, but there's also no real indication there was only one of it either. This is especially true when you take the Faraway Island event into account. Hell, the lore from the old Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia that the Dratini line was considered legendary until they found out you could just find it, so it's clear classifications like that can change if there's enough evidence in any of the games. Heatran really shouldn't be a legendary Pokemon though, that's the most blatant "this isn't an individual it's just a rare species" I've seen.

Legendaries = Pokemon people know exist and are documented in some form, either via folklore or some other method, hence why they're called 'legends'.
Mythicals are Pokemon very few people know exist and are often not even considered "real" which is why you can complete your Pokedex without seeing them.

Some of these we know where the first generation came from, we know that Suicune, Entei, and Raikou were first made by Ho-oh and then reproduced later. But others its up in the air other than that there are a few of them rarely throughout the lands.

Special Pokemon isn't a technical term.
But those lists work by showing what GF won't let either let the Battle Frontier frontier brains or Battle Tower variant trainers/bosses use and what it will keep from the RNG rosters.
This tells us what is also meant to be unique. As it isn't down to BST or certain monsters being 'too strong', but instead down to lore reasons. As it would break the lore for an NPC to use a Kyogre or a Dialga.

The list format was set in stone by Ruby/Sapphire. Showing that they've had the idea in mind for a long time.

Some can 'breed', like Solgaleo, but its meant to be so rare that there shouldn't be more than one of them around at any given time. Partly due to it being an Ultra Beast and being able to open portals to go to Ultra Space.

>Dratini/Dragonair/Dragonite - Dratini can be found in the wild in the Safari Zone and won as a prize at the Game Corner. Dragonite evolves at the highest level (55) of all Pokémon, and the only Trainer who uses these Pokémon is Lance, who you're lead to believe is the final boss.
>Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres - high stats, only 1 of each, appear in the overworld
