Hi /vp/,

I'm doing a HG run (which is super comfy) and I thought to maybe ditch the starter entirely for once and have Mareep as a pseudo-starter.

I got myself a Mareep and Gastly. Thinking maybe adding Murkrow and Scizor/Steelix.

Do you feel bad for ditching the starter if you do? I've never done it before and it seems psychologically daunting.

Nah, unless a starter is your favorite or you've got some great personal attachment it's alright to ditch after a few run throughs with each member. I tend to do so in generations I've replayed a lot- not because I dislike the starters, but because eventually i just get tired of using them and I start trying out newer mons.

It might seem daunting and shitty to ditch them initially, but after you've played with them for a few playthroughs you'll have an easier time of it.

I’d say “rent-free” but I’ve never played Gen5 and you mentioned gameplay. What makes the Unovan starters so bad in that regard?

not him, but Serperior is basically unusable because they put all of its power budget in its hidden ability. The other two are on the level of every other starter.

I stopped using the starters after Gen IV, it’s boring and their stats+ movepools are designed to outclass everything in the story portion of the game.

The thing is I got a good Typhlosion (last time I did Flamethrower/Sunny day/Solarbeam) but the movepool is a bit stale and I've done it before. Any suggestions for my team assuming
Ampharos, Gengar, +2?
I've done playthroughs with Snorlax, Dragonite, Tyranitar but it's sort of ez…

It's a bit overdone, but Gyarados is insanely strong in this gen and can clear the game all by itself. Plus you get a shiny one

I know but I just finished Platinum and had a Gyarados that swept everything.
It's S-tier (together with Alakazam?) for playthroughs and can literally solo the game. The red one comes at a high level too.

I don't ditch them. I like to do at least one run through with all 3 on my team to see their viability, then just stick with the best one on my real playthrough.

Only if I'm replaying. Right now for B2 I just made Axew my starter.
I've usually used every starter at least once anyway. Less so the higher up in generations we get.

You can only use a mon so many times before it becomes boring desu. Some of the starters are among my favorite mons of all times but I'll still box them because I've already used them so many times before.
Playing FireRed now and decided to box my Charizard to give Hitmonlee a try instead.

Usually my 1st 3 runs of a gen have 1 of the starters mandatorily, then from that point onwards I'll pick the one that'll give me the more challenging & box that shit if need be & don't really care about boxing.

Unless I really like that starter in particular & doing a general run of said gen of course, except for gen8 since all of them fucking suck.

An awful shitmon, a Johto classic.
When you get to Azalea Town you should grab a Heracross from a tree just so you can have an actual good pokemon as backup for when your shitmons inevitably die.

I stopped using my starter after gen 6 for the most part. None of them appealed to me, especially not their weird fursuit final evolutions, and then that became the trend moving forward. I used an unevolved Rowlet for Sun though because it's cute. When I replay older generations, I ditch the starter because I've used them so many times already, so I don't feel bad for either case.

I wound up delegating my Samurwott into being a surf/waterfall slave because aside from the odd rock type he wasn't doing much. Personally I think that's a fate worse than being boxed.

If I didn't go into Sword blind I would have never committed to Inteleon and swaped to Cramorant. Probably the first time I would not want to use any of the starters at all.
