People tend to feel overly extremely about them one way or the other in general when in reality they are just kinda "Meh" virtue of obviously being kinda rushed and incomplete (likely due the 3DS initial issues gaining ground before "What's wrong with you" putting pressure on getting a proper Pokémon game on there, especially with B2W2 sticking to the DS(i)), they aren't quite as SOULESS as some people claim but people also let a lot of its flaws go because "WOAH 3D" and having a streamlined online experience.
Personally i think XY was okay for what it was but that people letting it off too easy when it released (Keywords: "When it was released", a lot of people seem to soured on it since as time marched on) compared to BWB2W2 probably gave GameFreak a poor sense of direction where to take the series and what to prioritize following on with the ORAS>SwSh period.
I mean, i am biased though since XY is where i decided to get of my ass and make a Living De and bother with EV training (because Hyper Training was the first time i felt like i could have complete agency over it, even if it was slower then hordes).
I think XY gets less hate for what the games themselves actually are then for what they represent as the jump into 3D, turn to focus more on old mons over new ones, introduction of Fairies and shift of priorities in GameFreak and basically being a antithesis of what Gen5 was in general, which is why GenV and GenVI fags in particular seem to have the worst blood between eachother of all GenWarring fags.
