Want something that is new and not edgy? Write a game with 2 main characters. 2 different manageable teams. Make most battles multi battles, including gym leaders. Make up something like a tournament and league that only accepts pairs of trainers. Also, this opens the path to a lot of different things story wise: a rivarly, a love story, a story about inferiority complex, or one of them having a dark past/troubled childhood and the other saving them from despair, maybe a mix of all of these. Like for instance:
>be female protag
>be rich princess
>couldn't make any friends whatsoever during childhood for whatever reason
>grew up, developed a stoic and cold facade
>during her 18th birthday, her father gets murdered
>her mother sacrifices her life to let her escape
>now she hides her identity, scared, sad and with a thirst for vengeance, wanting justice to be served
>however, no pokemon and no power
>in a twist of events, meets male protag
>their personality complements hers perfectly, lots of heartwarming moments, funny gags, snarky remarks and also serious discussions
>story happens
I believe this thing I came up in 5 minutes is not dark and gratuitous enough to be considered edgy
