Pokemon’s excessive number of types is part of the charm.

Wind isnt a type despite being one of the sterotypical “four elements”, it instead shares its spot with a type dedicated to fucking birds.

Ground and rock are different things.
Ice and water are different things.

“Normal” is a type and in any other game this would mean lacking a type but in pokemon they can be HALF NORMAL, because its its own type.

The plant type is called “grass” and nobody questions why its called grass.

Who cares, its fun to have more types.

I can understand this thought process, but when you look at the type chart, most of the type interactions are pretty different - it just so happens that Ground and Rock share near identical interactions with the starter types (both do 2x damage to Fire, both take 2x damage to Grass and Water), so it makes the two seem more similar than they are from a gameplay standpoint.

I always took 'half normal' pokemon to be a watered-down version of whatever type it's paired with. like bibarel is not as "watery" as something like octillery for example, so it has the normal type to dilute that

Rock types are things that are made out of rocks and crystals. Ground types tend to things that simply just live in the ground, or have control over the ground, and have natural skin and flesh for the most part. I guess you could argue combing rock and steel into a mineral type, but design wise, rock and steel are very different. Rock types tend to be :rougher-looking, while steel types tend to be slicker, or maybe even more "elegant" or more elements that scream man-made or human-like
I don't really pay much attention to other monster tamers, but isn't Pokemon of the only monster tamers to have a dedicated metal type?

Ground includes things that are decidedly not rocks, like sand or mud.
Rock includes things that are decidedly not ground, like crystals or salt.

That said, there are some things that are clearly in the wrong category. Ground gets "tectonic" moves, but rock gets "continental" moves? Pick a side. And moves like Tar Shot should obviously be Ground, but are Rock.

Why is there a bug type and no reptile, mammal or fish type?
Why were birds normal/flying?
Why is there a dragon type that's only effective against other dragon types, but the only move available was a fixed 40 HP damage move?
They should've taken the five element theory (wood, fire, water, earth, metal), with a couple of more elements like ice, electric, wind, light/divine and dark. It feels like they designed magical monsters and paired them with a bunch of IRL animals (bug, normal and fighting for humanoids) and by doing that, those pokemons that are bugs would waste 1 type on the bug type just because they are bugs, and birds waste 1 type on flying type because they have wings

If they didn't have typings like bug or flying, they would've needed to put more thought into most of the gen 1 mons, like an elemental moth, butterfly, bettle, mantis, etc. Instead, they made a normal as fuck caterpillar, gave it a bug type and called it a day. bug is also the worst type in the game

In gen 1, Flying type was called Bird type until late in development, and is exclusively about things birds do. Wind moves in gen 1 are all normal type (Gust, Whirlwind, Razor Wind).

They should have just made a separate Wind type.

There are 3 ghost type bone mons.
Bones are ghost. They even reworked Marowak with the Alola form to be a ghost.

Alolan Marowak is the only Ghost type that uses bones as a weapon. Two (Cubone and Kantonian Marowak) are Ground type, one (Mandibuzz) is Dark/Flying, and the other (Lucario) is Fighting/Steel.

Most non-blast types should just be Egg groups with additional abilities.
Grass should just be an egg group with specialised moves.

Attacking using leaves is retarded, they are like solar panels. The Plant type should use absorb-like moves, spikes, seed, and pollen related moves.
Most of these should be normal, except absorb-like moves that should be Poison type

Mammals = Ground, Normal
Birds = Flying, Normal
Lizards = Ground, Dragon
Frogs = Water + Ground
Fish = Water

it is not so much about the species, but about the adaptation. Setting mammals as Normal lets you dictate how weird are other animals/monsters. Bugs are the most different so they get their own type. Mollusks should had gotten their own type too, but most are in the water, so they didn't even attempt to give them a unique typing. (Notice how Gamefreak struggles with slug mons )

Clay mons do not fit under the Ground type, not even their attacks , which are projectiles, hence can harm Flying types.

Gameplay wise?
Ground types are usually flexible offensive type that's the only weakness against electrics but they are useless against flying. Many ground types are made to be strong hitters that also hold decent bulk.

I'm not sure what gamefreaks idea is for rock types.
One part I think its just the early game scrub type like bug, since most 1st gem leaders are Rock type.
but also i think rock is supposed to be defensive. at least that could have been what was planned in the first gen.
Considering how high the defense rock types have, lack of well-distributed attacks.
Unfortunately, there are actually very few rock types that are any good for defense. Since they have to many weaknesses and not enough defenses, and Steel overshadows them to be the "defensive type". Ironically ground does to in some cases

To make them more defensive I'd get rid of their weakness to fighting or ground. Fighting doesn't make that much sense, i get the cliche of boxer breaking bricks, but its not like grass (wood) is weak to fighting. I don't even know why rock is weak to ground. Because a mountain can be destroyed by an earthquake? but a mountain is more ground than rock. or because brick and concrete is broken by earthquakes. thats man made stuff and no rock types are even those things. Just something to make it more defensively viable.

They have pretty clearly defined niches and shockingly little overlap. Mudsdale and Diglett for example are very obviously Ground type while also having nothing to do with "Rock", and while most mono-Rock pokemon could realistically also be Ground type, there are very few duel type Rock Pokemon that would make sense if they traded their Rock secondary typing for a Ground one.

I think the general idea is that Ice's defensive shortcomings are absolutely intentional, but it's supposed to be balanced out by how good its offense is, namely hitting the defensive juggernaut Dragon super effectively, making it the secret weapon to use against Lance in the original games. Rock ended up being a very unfortunate victim of changes in the core game design and power creep. They are in fact very effective tanks in Generation 1, stonewalling a good number of very threatening Pokemon and being the only type to resist the ever common Normal, while still having very exploitable weaknesses to keep them from getting to overwhelming (a concept which I wish was true of Chansey, easily at its most cancerous in this generation). The actual purpose of the rock type in Generation 1 was to be an early roadblock to try to incentivize players to not rely on just spamming strong normal type moves. The fact that Rhydon and Golem had strong competitive niches is more of a happy coincidence rather than an intentional attempt at creating a balanced competitive environment. If they wanted that then Psychic and Normal wouldn't have been designed in the way they were.

In order to give Dark any basis, they should make it either as a goblin type (cant because of Fairy ) or merge it with Poison.
Poison is weird, their attacks make sense , but as a type not much, basically Poison types have adapted to poisonous environments OR have weird bodies that prevent Fighting types from attacking effectively (goo, quills, serpentine body)
