Day 44 of searching for a shiny ralts on route 102 in gen 3. Last night I found a shiny seedot on random encounter 49,657, my 8th shiny so far in this search. I hope today is the day.

I believe in you anon. I'm looking for a Growlithe in FireRed route 8 and I haven't seen the first shiny. Once I see the first shiny in the route I'll decide whether to continue the hunt. Gen 3 shiny hunting is the most enduring the ultimate trial. Everything else is meaningless.

I'm hunting for a shiny Lapras in VC Crystal. I only get one day a week to do this, with no way to improve the odds. At least in gen 3 you can take the battery out when starting a new save file in Ruby or Sapphire to generate a specific secret number and thus a specific seed that you can use for RNG manipulation. I can't do the same here.

RNG manipulation is cheating, and you can cheat in gen 2 as well as 3 if you want. Ralts is only 4% encounter chance on route 102, 10% with repel trick

I don't consider RNG manipulation cheating because you're not modifying the game's code when doing it. All you're doing is pressing buttons in a specific fashion on a stock copy of the game. To me it's like some sort of ritual to summon the thing you want, no different from modern shiny hunting methods like shiny sandwiches and outbreak filtering.

Not really. To me, modifying the game's code like injecting Pokemon is cheating. Using an external tool without modifying your game isn't cheating. That's no different than reading a guide on how to do anything else.

To be fair, people consider cartridge tilting to be cheating. I imagine some people would also consider putting a cartridge on a hotplate to be cheating as well, as would doing Stop N Swop after you performed ACE. RNG manipulation might not be cheating, but when you do shit like take out the batteries to perform it it's really more of an argument.

There is an argument to be held in removing the batteries from a cart, but I've needed to replace batteries in my carts anyway to enable basic saving or time-based functions again so it's just something I do along the way. Plus, it doesn't work if you already have a save, it requires a new game to generate a specific seed. So you can't just on a whim yank the battery out to start RNG manipulating for a shiny Kyogre, for instance.

Also checking around, there's little to no RNG manipulation methods for gen 2 at all. People just use Lua scripts to really quickly soft reset on emulator, far faster than the game or you could physically do.

You need external tools for rng manipulation. The developers created rng deliberately. It's one thing to change the scope of rng through things like the masuda method, but the rng manipulation you describe is using external tools to bypass randomness entirely. This is obviously cheating

Bypassing randomness though in-game methods is no different from skipping to the end of a chain battle or masuda method breeding session. There's currently a glitch in SV where Flutter Manes don't spawn during the day, but shiny ones will. So if you eat a Fairy-type shiny and encounter-boosting sandwich and head to the bottom of Area Zero only shiny Flutter Manes will spawn. Is me telling you this cheating?
