5ds had a boy getting dragged into a psychic cult and was put under a lethal dosis of electricity to bring out any psychic abilities. Or a guy ripping out his mechanical, which is probed with a bomb. Or drunk ass gambling rings. Or a apocalyptic future which was caused by the manifestation of greed and self-centered evolution. Pokémon is still a bit far off if we compare it to YGO.

Pokemon Special is where the line of acceptability is drawn for me. Anything more than that (like Shudo’s plans) isn’t Pokemon anymore.

When it involves human violence or unnecessary physical cruelty towards pokemon, I guess. More or less just enough for pokemon battles. At least, for the main stuff like the mainline games and anime.
Some of the side material feels more like what you'd expect from a kid's series, but I guess that's not what they really want to go for.

Germanfag, got to watch the 3rd season actually uncensored and unedited in full dub. 4kids for some reason flunked out on Germany and some other studio just did it directly. Although it never reached even the full 4th season. It fucking stopped dead in its track after Yusei got nuked into a wormhole.

It's not just Pokemon
Culture as a whole has gotten more overly juvenile and lacking in edge or coolness
Even something like horror movies where people are expected to die in gruesome ways they're now mostly platforms for women and 'men' to talk about muh dindus being oppressed or how evil masculinity is with SLOW BURN BONE CHILLING ATMOSPHERIC CINEMATOGRAPHY, or you have things like Disney movies which weren't afraid 30-40 years ago to have a scary scene or two or a badass villain or a death now replacing all of it with muh generational trauma and 2 hour animated therapy sessions
Pokemon has just followed with the times and been as corporate as it always has

Yeah, I mean Yugioh and Digimon as well we're famous for having the edgiest monsters anime had ever seen and now are also kiddie crap.
But for those at least we got enough good mature seasons, it annoys me that Pokémon never had additional anime seasons back then when they were bolder.
Though I am hopeful for the new anime, feels like it'll have some level of threat for the MC who is being chased by actual bad guys and not just team rockey.

Yeah, I miss the cool movies like Halloween Town series and Don't Look Under the Bed, those movies were actually terrifying
