>>53518778I grew up on fire red, skipped hoenn and johto for some reason (probably the mystery dungeon games), and my next ones were d/p, so let me say - the map design and aesthetic, if nothing else, was absolutely wonderful. I loved and still love the safari wetlands, the big open snowy areas, and the 2.5d style of it all so much. The overworld was peak pokemon, to me. But almost none of the actual pokemon they added that gen interest me at all, except cranidos line and one or two others.
