The #1 criticism of it, by a fucking country mile, is that they had this excellent and well-planned out arc with the Dark Ocean that they just threw away because the writing staff was sacked.
I've NEVER heard the pairings be a criticism of it. At worst it's considered a side-note in an increasingly schizo taped-together ball of loose plot threads.
