They're not even modern mimics in the Pokemon world. Present-day mimicmons are small Pokemon easily mistakable for items, such as Flittle, Capsakid, and Floette. Foongus will also disguise itself as a Pokeball item, and is about the same size as one too.

No one mistakes a Voltorb for an item anymore.

they are a cool take on a mimic but I didnt really like them til recently. I been playing since red and blue but you know how tastes change as you get older. I got more appreciation for stuff like this now. Same deal with newer mons like trubbish or klink. I am way more into inanimate object style mons than I used to be. Claydol is probably the biggest example for me personally of a mon that I was indifferent to when I saw it but now I really love.

That's the thing. It's entirely subjective. There are no objectively good or bad gen and newer designs aren't worse.
Someone can chose what he considers to be the worst pokemon of all time from a recent gen and you'll find something similar or equaly as bad in the two first gen. All the things that are negatively criticized in newer gen like weird humanoids, simple animals, overdesigned pokemon, lazy designs, object pokemon, etc. were already a thing in 1999.

I have no issue with Voltorb and it's nice to see them rolling around on the ground and exploding as soon as they see you in SV. It's way harder to explain the logic behind all magnemites having 3 phillips head screws and 2 horseshoe magnets as parts of their body.

Dark Souls (even though I never played it) had a good interpretation of a mimic. Still keeps the basic idea but has an interesting design. I wish these Pokemon also had something more unique going on with their designs.

That’s why they made Foongus/Amoongus. Those are way better executed same idea, because they aren’t just pokeballs with eyes but rather shrooms what looks like pokeballs from a certain angle

Subjectively? Maybe. Voltorb is a quirky JRPG monster with a humorous implementation. Foongus is just as immersion breaking if not more so. Makes you wonder why a natural creature would mimic a man made object; same reason Hisuian voltorb is worse than the original.

In Gen 1, it was heavily implied that some pokemon were artificial. It went hand in hand with the original industrial theming of the series.

You retarded, bro? It only works better because of the modern representation of overworld items. The GB games had pokemon crudely represented in the overworld, and the larger item sprites doubled as these crude representations for the Voltorb line. It makes perfect sense in context.
