This is hardly a new thing. Brendan and Lucas only appeared in movie intros. Hilbert, Hilda, Nate, and Rosa never appeared. Both of Selene's designs went unused, and Ash never adopted Elio's USUM design. Victor and Gloria never appeared, and Ash's outfit doesn't even remotely look like Victor's.

The anime does whatever it wants, going at its own pace.
