I don't understand how this story is written. It they wanted this, it should have been a big twist that the Star fuckers were bullied and were lashing out. Instead you are told tis every step of the way and they just keep making it less ambiguous before confirming they didn't even hurt anyone. The further in you get with this storyline, the less controversy there actually is.

This was the twist, except they never had to actually do any harm to anyone. The bullies were pussies who left the school as soon as the heat got real, think of a kid bringing a gun to school pointing it but never having to shoot (except they brought their pokemon weapons) its actually a hardcore story if you think about it

Clavell doesn't know the truth because he and the rest of the current faculty were hired a year and a half ago, after Operation Star concluded. There's no records on what happened as part of what happened, and Team Star is not responding to Clavell's threats to disband or face expulsion. That's why he joins you as Clive, to actually learn the truth without arousing suspicion as an authority figure wielding an executioner's axe, and determine if his initial judgement was correct or if he needed to change his decision.

As a reminder, Team Star's grunts have been causing problems for the current school body, with Nemona constantly chasing them away. It would've been nice to see more of this happening instead of just be told it, but that's how it goes.

It's not a twist if it's revealed to you shortly after fighting your first Star boss. Pretty much all of their cutscenes hammer it in that they are good people and some of the stuff from before you enter their bases lays it on thick too.
You essentially only think they are badguys when you fight the two who are harassing Penny at the start of the game, and learn that they are victims as soon as you see them again.

It's not treated that seriously at all though. The further in you get the more it seems like Clavell understands that too. And the only one that faces any extensive punishment is Penny and that's more because of her hacking the local economy and even then it ends up being positive reinforcement.
A lot of the in universe controversy surrounding this storyline seems like it has to be assumed by the player.

It's not even that because everyone who attends the Academy gets a starter Pokemon, so everyone in school has Pokemon and they have a raised courtyard specifically for physical exercise, including Pokemon battles. What happened was the equivalent of the anime club dressing up in cosplay and mobbing the popular jocks and prep girls spreading gossip, who then realized they were dealing with an entire anime convention's security and split. The series of dropouts lead to Team Star being blamed, and they thus became the villains for trying to be assertive and standing up for themselves.

No, Team Star challenged them to a Pokemon battle. They tell you this repeatedly, they weren't trying to scare them off, they were trying to earn respect to be left alone. It backfired and had the opposite effect to what they intended, hence Penny getting suspended and sent back to Galar and the Team Star bosses not listening to authority and waiting in their bases for her to eventually return.

I also see the Metal Gear Solid equivalence, with FOXHOUND endlessly praising the lost Big Boss, and trying to inherit his will. Except this time, Big Boss ended up being Otacon all along.

I will believe what I saw and read in the game instead of this dumb headcanon you're trying to push. If the Team Star bosses were out for blood they'd be more aggressive and vicious in combat with the player. Instead they give up and take selfies with you after you beat them. It was a Pokemon battle they wanted and nothing more.

If it were then both former director Harrington and current director Clavell would have a much harsher opinion on Team Star instead of constantly reiterating that they're the victims, misblamed for an incident that didn't go as they wanted it to go. Taro doesn't even get displaced. Every version of his story just has him stay longer than he thought he was staying in the magical god dragon palace, and then it turns out he only survived there because Otohime was wizarding his old age into the treasure box. If anything that's a case of immortality, not time travel. And even if Terapagos did pull a similar trick, why would Heath look like an old man and not just middle-aged dude even if he changed his look over time? Why would he even care about being a school director when he was laughed out of academia?

They just stuck it and some Varoom in a car, not really different from every case of an electric Pokemon turning something on with electricity or any other case of manual Pokemon labor. I could see tha argument that hooking them up to machines is bad but nothing implies the Revaroom and Varoom are incovenienced outside of you kicking the Starmobile's ass like a normal Pokemon. Hell, since it was just going to run off of Charcadet that were perfectly fine helping out there's even fewer comparisons to abuse there.

What I dont get is how the point of not being bullies must have been lost on the star leaders because their newer recruits were using peer pressure and bullying kids to try and join star. They understood what being ostracized was like and went with the plan originally to stand up for themselves. What this basically means is each Star leader had to completley 180 in the most bitter perspective possible, shitting on Cassiopia's desires in the process by becoming the villians they hated.

So I understand how difficult it can be to keep tabs on every level of deligstion on the chain of command, but at the same time it's a little hard to ignore this persistent attitude of lower level star grunts. Its almost like the leaders were revered so much that the grunts and mid level leaders shielded them from the bad things they did. But still, a leader has to take that responsibility, if we want to say it was a flaw and they fucked up, fine, but the leaders were also being cunts holed up in their bases, and they werent just doing it with an attitude of "just dont fuck with me and I wont fuck with you"

I can already feel the semantics arising, but this is a required unoptional story to reach the end credits of the game. It is a "sideplot" in the sense it is not the main story of the game, only because the main story is divided into 3 paths, this being one, converging at the end. You NEED to do Starfall to beat the game unoptionally, so I can't say it is less than main plot. Because at that rate you could argue Nemora and the Pokemon League 8s a side plot too.

You are correct in that Starfall is fucking stupid, but this is the same company that just a generation ago realized they didn't set up the mandatory encounter with the legendary Pokemon as a part of the main plotline in Sword and Shield and just decided that Chairman Rose would endanger the region he is explicitly trying to save because Leon said he would only after he finished the publically televised nation event their region is known for in less than a day.

Hop's path was like Sonia's and Hop and the Player's path is a mirror of Sonia and Leon's, where they both started as trainers become champion together, but after getting destroyed by Leon multiple times, Sonia decided to go into sciences and became a professor's aid.
Which is what happened to Hop as well, only he had the extra baggage of trying to live up to his brother's legacy before Leon just said follow your own path.

For the last time, Chairman Rose is only trying to "save" the region so he can go down in history as Galar's savior. That's why he's so hellbent on being able to reveal what he did on the day of the Pokemon league, since everyone in the region is watching.

It's supposed to tie into the game's theme about rewriting history or whatever.

This does not change the fact that Rose's ego suddenly (from our perspective) being so big he thinks waking up the giant skeleton dragon above a stadium of people would make him look good makes sense, especially when the worst the game implies (in my recollection at least) before hunting down Leon is that the League is too focused on showmanship to support places like Spikemuth properly. Or that him using the Darkest Day as his ticket to heroism makes any sense when he publicay says "I am bringing the apocalypse :)" and then complains about Leon refusing to help him with it.

And yeah, there's a theme of revisionism but the most the game goes into before and after Eternatus is people taking credit for legendary Pokemon, which doesn't 100% translate over to Rose trying to show out.

What the game DOES mention, multiple times including the DLC, is that Rose was always a weird and impulsive visionary, the Willie Wonka of energy engineering, with Oleana specifically bringing up once that Rose always gets annoyed and sad if he can't do what he wants to as fast as he wants to.

There is no "BIG DARK" or "SECRET" reason for why Rose woke up Eternatus on his own, it is what he said himself: He did it because he thought it was more important than another league match. He failed, so he yelled at Leon to make Leon show up to do it for him. The End.
