Leon was ranked higher than Cynthia, that's enough to piss me off and tell me the writers considered her weaker than some champion who literally debuted in that season of the anime. It's insulting and, like I said, probably a decision by American.

Ranks are irrelevant, as he never fought Cynthia/Steven and as soon as he fought Ash officially - he lost.
Cynthias feats in the anime are so much better than Leons:
- only 1 loss in the whole anime (Leon - 3 losses)
- 2 gimmicks mastered (Leon - 1)
- defeated peak Pikachu (Leon never did, not in an official match)
- Ash never defeated full power Cynthia/Garchomp, but did beat FP Leon.
- Cynthias Garchomp fought off Palkia, meanwhile Charizard got rekt by the weaker Eternatus. Steven also has better feats vs legends.

on top of all that - Leons "undefeated streak" was always fraudulent

If they truly had wanted that they would have made Cynthia's defeat be clean and not have it have like five asterisks on top of it.
Despite the mandate to shill the flavor of the month and charizardino and how full of hacks the ashnime is they were self-aware enough in that regard.

I mean, that's besides the point.
Point is that Leon ended up being the final boss instead rightfully being Cynthia. That in any way shape or form he was presented as stronger even if common sense says otherwise.

Sure, but if Cynthia had been the final boss as she rightfully deserved it meant that all the shilling, hype, good animation, climax, etc could have gone to Cynthia instead of all being wasted on the already forgotten flavor of the month just for it to end up being a wet fart.
