>>53542254Gen I and II feel so much more real to me because they're grounded and the later Gens don't feel as thought out. They feel like they couldn't possibly work. Like I can't imagine anyone in the later games ever reproducing, they don't know anything about eggs and they're too happy-go-lucky and clean to have dirty thoughts. I would believe that they all think they're brought by a stork Pokémon. But in the earlier games where a girl will chastise you over looking at her legs or an old man will laugh about pretty women, it feels more real.
You get Maxie and Archie who want to dry up the oceans/flood the planet to save the environment and you're supposed to take this seriously instead of questioning how environmentalists are acting with zero foresight. I can at least understand Cyrus from a philosophical JRPG antagonist perspective, that spirit is the cause of all strife and suffering and that the world is too far gone and needs to be made anew. But that perspective makes less sense the further the games progress and more saccharine they become.
I was actually thrilled when Legends tried to remember the series' roots. They outright state in the English games for once that Pokémon shrink, something 99.9% of English fans didn't know had been happening since the beginning. They're using Apricorn balls, it's around the Meiji era, they caution you that you could die if you're careless in the wild just like it's normal dialogue. It feels more real than Pokémon has in a long time, even if it's no longer in the modern day.
