This is the thing, Pokemon at the start tended to look more "naked" but then as generations went on they became more busy.
More details =/= better design
But, the generation that grew up with the games with more complex designs are a big chunk of the community now and they complain about a design without superficial markings as "bland", the opposite of many older fans back then who thought new ones were "overdesigned"
It's created this divide in perception of how Pokemon designs should be, and I think some older fans are frustrated that many of those that grew up with say, Gen 4 tend to think of older Pokemon (1 / 2) as "bland" "boring" "underdesigned" and "literally just a X"
But again, the things that they don't like about Gen 1 designs are the same things that make many older fans (those who were there in 1998 / 99 / 00) love them.
