No, gen 3 has some unique ideas, like having a bigger variety of outdoor environments and gimmicks while gen 1 is mostly just extremely basic outdoor routes but with more open exploration, as well as putting more plot focus on the legendaries, which was novel until gen 4+ ran it into the ground by repeating the same thing.

This is actually a realistic outcome. Don’t act as rivals aren’t objectuvely cucks, the difference is that Hop is self aware about it.

Gen 3 Elite Four made no sense. Every single Elite Four type was a repeat from either Kanto Elite Four (Phoebe is Ghost like Agatha, Drake is Dragon like Lance, Glacia is Ice like Lorelei) or Johto (Sydney is Dark like Karen). What's the point of repeating types that had already been used?

I like Barry, he is a nice simple rival with a nice simple arc that isn’t just “I am now the pokemon professor or a champion or some high ranking guy” shit, his arc is him learning to not rush everything, to let thing simmer, instead of going full on non stop, why not slow down a bit, explore the area, train you mons properly
Not everything needs a clear goal or some bombastic ending, and honestly, this is how more pokemon rivals should be (but better executed of course), kids need some real life lessons and some generic random shallow “do not le bully” crap
