Yeah I like the trope but it's too fixed and obvious now.
I loke the way team rocket was handled in gen 2, where they were outwardly incompetent and flailing a little, but not totally a joke.

The villain trope sucks ass.
The problem is that they are always weak as shit so they never actually seem like a threat. They're a fucking joke. Also, their goals tend to be totally idiotic.
That's why I like the non-villain antagonists so much more. They actually can be literal jokes in the sense that they are not even trying to be a real threat, so it doesn't feel as ridiculous when you bet their asses.
I didn't like Team Yell though cause their "motive" was fucking stupid. Team Skull was great, Team Star was ok. Would've been better if we learned more about the characters

Honestly it seems like they've been trying to undermine every Champion since Cynthia.

You don't even fight Alder in the first round of the Unova E4. Then he gets replaced by Iris in B2W2.

Diantha did absolutely nothing in XY.

Kukui was just a stand-in Champion for Alola, replaced by Hau in USUM.

Leon was the first Champion since Cynthia to actually be treated like one in the main story. But he's a guy so he could never be the next Cynthia.

Geeta was once again an afterthought who admits she doesn't actually give a fuck about battling.
