>>53559852RSE did a good job making most pokemon viable. There's a guy doing a really good write-up about it in another thread. Stuff like linoone and sableeye and ninjask and swalot everything is usable. And not just in a "you can play any shitmon if you level it up enough" kind of way but in a "they game designers did a good job this generation" kind of way. Everyone has a SOMETHING. Movepool or ability or role in a team.
I think the old way of doing special attacks and physical attacks hurt sharpedo and crawdaunt a lot but that was fundamentally a problem with the system. That got fixed with the following generation. Is sharpedo a shitmon tho? Idk I never used it.
Mightyena looks lame from the stats and movepool but intimidate is such a great ability it supports the team. I like how in the remake you can get ice fang. He isn't 100% outclassed by absol. I used delkatty in sapphire. It has that "normal type that can do it all" thing going on that a lot of Kanto mons had so it fits in any team.
I really like bugs that are designed to be excellent early on but be retired in the midgame. Beedrill in red. I had a butterfree in ultrasun that was my standout guy until the moment he wasn't anymore and couldn't keep up statwise with other evolved 'mons but that's OK, he did his job. Makes me want to try dustox now. Understand that some guys are early game and some are late game. I think Kanto and Hoenn are well designed in their placements. Sinnoh isn't diverse enough and has a lot of shitmons and unova puts all the cool stuff at the very end of the game and leaves you with cringe for the first few gyms until the desert finally brings some diversity
Love Xatu but he fucking sucked in GSC and HGSS but in ultra sun his move pool became so good that he actually is pretty darn useful (replaced the butterfree I mentioned earlier) so that's a shitmon that overcame shit status. When did magneton get good? Was he always good? In ultrasun he rules
