I don't know what to say, it feels that they gimped themselves too hard for no reason
Red and Blue had the justification of shitty AI and level up moves, Gen 2 tried to cheat with aerodactyl at least and has snorlax as a potential last wall to break, Gen 3 Steven is hurt badly by the split but is decent as a super boss in emerald, Wallace is fine for a water specialist, Cynthia gave the kids a scare, HGSS actually tried for the first time with Lance rematch they even gave him a Garchomp, Salamence and Altaria with fun moves, Gen 5 was divisive, bw gave us Alder who is just meh, challenge mode in b2w2 was fun with a second romp at lo Hydreigon and focus sash Haxorus but the base was just another dragon themed champion, Diantha was underwhelming, Steven in the remake was fun despite the Carbink situation and Alola gave us the first "champion" to lead with stealth rock and some fun tittle defence battles, USUM gave us a decent amount of fanservice with rainbow rocket before we went back to shit with SS and Leon
Part of my disdain for Leon is that they have been improving since Gen 4 only to give us this thing as a Champion followed by Geeta, is hard to be optimistic when you know they actually nailed something good before and can do something nice if they want like they did with Arceus
