Pretty sure it’s this one. Gamefreak is lazy, and I’m sure they heard some of the “Why did my bro not get a special snowflake form?” feedback from retards in the fanbase. Of course, those are largely the same people who (rightfully) bitched about how lazy future gimmicks have become. Megas are conceptually the best gimmick the series has ever had, and the only reason they “failed” was a lack of dedication / time.

There comes a point where the bait is so disingenuous that it loses potency. Tera is mechanically interesting but incredibly lazy otherwise. Megas are mechanically simple but visually + thematically fun. In a better timeline, we’d have access to both, maxes would stay gone, and z-moves would also stay gone to prevent random nukes stacked with tera.

They're literally the only gimmick that persisted past their original generation and into spin offs. The closest one to doing the same is Dynamax and that's not because the feature itself made it out but rather because of a feature attached to it, Raids.

Megas only lasted and extra half of a generation because Gamefreak weren't sure what to do when getting rid of the mess they'd made. As soon as they decided on that, your gimmick got dropped just as much as Z-moves.
Your only ""win"" is being lazily dropped into a post-game battle facility because there was no intention of adding to the gimmick again but they had already copied the code.

Anon, there's no such thing as half a generation. It's either in or it isn't and mega evolution was in every single gen 6 and 7 game. Meaning it was in 3 sets of games as opposed to the 1 set each of the others had.
I suppose USM could count as another if you split hairs but whatever.

As much as i hated the idea of megas, i really liked some of the designs, and changes it gave some of the pokemon.
ESPECIALLY when it came to pokemon like Pinsir, Mawile, Aerodactyl, etc. where it was given to pokemon who didnt have a full evolution line yet.

After they got rid of megas, i really wish they instead gave them official evolutions that were slightly nerfed versions of their megas, that way they wouldnt go to waste
