Unironically Gen 4 with friend battles and Battle Revolution online
No snob smogon shit
No tiers, people were just playing with their own strategies and even though we had power creep with Pokémon like Garchomp, you didn’t need to build an entire team around him specifically.
You were more free to experiment with different sets and trying them out without some snobbish faggot yelling in you’re ear about viability

gen 6 online is actually designed with the intent of actually playing the game, and it baffles me that later games in the series failed to build upon such a solid foundation
>see friend is online in gen 6
>send trade/battle request
>they accept
vs
>see friend is online in gen 8
>have to leave the game and find some way to contact them to let them know you want to trade/battle
>have to hope they're actually paying attention to whatever you're using to contact them instead of focusing on the game
>have to send them a link code that hopefully no one else is using
>you also have to be attempting to connect at the exact same time instead of it being any sort of lobby system
>once you've done what you want you have to repeat the entire process to do anything else like them
gen 9 union circles improved upon this slightly, but it still doesn't fix the issue that having to rely on codes for online interactions is stupid when other games and systems give the option to send direct requests to other players

I get PBR, but in what world was smogon not relevant when it came to Friend Battles?
If you went online on some forum or IRC chat to look for fights you always got questions about format.

I can only assume you were a kid just playing WiFi random matches at the time because everything you just described was around in Gen IV. People were using Smogon sets and everybody complained about Garchomp and Stealth Rock.

Not saying they weren’t a problem, but not a massive problem as most is today.
Garchomp and Stealth Rock wasn’t super hard to prepare for, I had a free rein team with a weavile to counter Chomp.
I started being competitive with Gen 4, and I never found it as obnoxious as they are now, more like

Now it just feels like everyone is is demeaning with every set and the Pokémon in them.
Like even finding an all legendaries team in PBR wasn’t as obnoxious as current formats
