Nobody knew about Stat Experience, AKA the Gen I version of EVs. Nobody knew about IVs either. And nobody knew how busted the Special stat was. Nobody even knew the fact that each type was either exclusively physical or exclusively special. This means if you had a Hitmonchan with Fire Punch, you'd do no damage because fire moves are special attacks, and Hitmonchan has a base Special stat of 35. All you could do back then was take the Pokemon you like, build teams for each cup, and try your best to give them decent moves, all without knowing the massive amount of tomfoolery hidden in Gen I. And that's not even minmaxing, that's just casual team building. So quit LARPing as an elitist with this low quality bait. Just because it's possible to beat R2 with rentals doesn't change the fact that rentals are shit. The fact that your literal who streamer spends more than half his time resetting failed runs is proof that there's no skill involved with rentals, it's just luck.
