If I understand it right, it's not that they don't want to walk, it's that Pokemon Go has a major co-op feature that requires getting like 5-10 people together in a specific place to utilize (and the places were randomized, so it was hard to schedule in advance). The item that was removed allowed players to do it from a distance, allowing people in bumfuck nowhere to utilize it.
