Its the fact theyre not your mons that youve caught and raised with movesets you can customise. Seeing your own mons in there taking on swathes of annoying trainers adds to the emotional investment and replayability by tweaking moves to try different strategies. Renaming your own mons to make them different colors was also a nice touch.
With only rentals you lose all that and are basically stuck with a bunch of mons you dont care about.
