Pokemon doesn't have any interaction outside of your turn so each player does whatever they want during their turn without penalty. It's all a race to who gets their combo out first. No other playstyles are really viable. It can be fun in its simplicity but it doesn't scratch the itch other TCGs scratch with instants, traps and counters.
