The downfall started in gen 6, but not because of gen 6 itself but due to the rampant gen 1 wank with the two mega evolutions for Charizard & Mewtwo, and having a Lapras & the gen 1 starters forced on you. Then you have gen 8 with Leon having his ace being a Charizard.
The gen 1 wank was what unironically led to the downfall of Pokémon, all because people were ass hurt over not being able to use a Pikachu in a playthrough of gen 5.
