However, technical limitations from the early games just had you fighting gym leaders and the Elite Four in their own little rooms, no on-screen audience (though both the original RGBY and GSC imply people are watching, anyway - Oak shows up in both to congratulate you, claiming to have seen the whole thing even though there was no possible place for him to have been hiding). Like virtually everything in the older gens, your brain is supposed to 'fill in the gaps' here - there's supposed to be people watching all of your League matches, routes are supposed to be much larger than they appear in-game, cities and towns are supposed to be normal-sized and contain more than 4-5 buildings at any given time, and so on.
