I wouldn't know, the games never bothered to give any lore beyond a pokedex description.
So unless you watched the movies and had access to a limited event to specific games why the fuck would it be popular?
Gamefreak are retarded at marketing, Mightest Mark charizard probably spent longer in people's minds that this pokemon.

Because they made it mythical for no goddamned reason, very few people have one and next to nobody used him on the team and got memories of using it. So nobody cares.
