This is what I was gonna post. And it's not a joke or exaggeration. Seriously, what is going on with SV's art direction? This was right after PLA too which had fantastic looking characters. Does Turner have something to do with this?

Yea, because peonia 100% feels like something an amateur tumblr artist would design. Generic ambiguous brown for diversity, half assed looking fro with straight bangs(nothing wrong with the combo, but it’s been done a lot and could be executed better), and a bunch of soft pretty colors slapped on for ‘appeal’ but ultimately cannot help an unremarkable design. She also looks like if a steven universe fan attempted to make an oc donut steel

Something like that. I read that a woman designed Geeta and Rika at least, and that she has some fruity shoujo manga series or something. It would explain why both Geeta and Rika's faces are not conventionally attractive and they have weird lanky builds.

She's a recycled character design. She uses the lass's body. Kind of like how Honey recycles the beauty model. It's probably why these 2 don't have any official art of them even though they're named characters.

PLA only had good designs cause they had to base most of them off the classic characters. Aside from PLA, waifu designs haven’t been good since gen 7 (which wasn’t even a good gen, it just had top tier waifus)

Milo is arguably one of the worst ones there what are you talking about. You have this child's head and distorted face on top of this muscular body with weird feet and overall just an unsettling form.
Maybe he's a design that in theory could work well and could have fit in with the older more cohesive designs with tweaking but not how he's drawn or modeled in Gen 8

I'd argue Avery isn't a bad design, he falls into a very specific anime/manga trope (basically the feminine-looking mean guy who is typically either full-on evil or used as comic relief).
I think he's better executed than Melli, at least. Avery is objectively pretty and is a handbook example of that trope, he's just dressed awfully.
Melli incarnates pretty much the same trope but he's a lot weaker as a design.
