Africans didn't live half naked in primitive prehistoric huts because they were le noble savage who loves ecology and lives in harmony with nature, but because they were a primitive, inferior civilization.
They were inferior not only in architecture but in everything else too. This meant a chaotic society with human sacrifices, cannibalism, widspread slavery, massive child mortality rate....etc.
Whenever they were given the choice to live in more advanced dwellings (like those brought by colonial overlords), they did gladly.
