I've been looking into generating maps through scripting in RPG Maker.
So far I've understood ~70% of how the map datastructure works, but one part that eludes me is how the tiles in the tileset are chosen.
The data for what tiles to be used are stored in a 3-d array, but I'm not particularly sure how the x,y,z values correspond to a specific tile.
I'll be taking a bit of a break to learn some maze generating algos but if anyone has some knowledge I'd appreciate the help.

How do you mean meaningfully? Like what type of change do you want to see? Because overhaul hacks like radical red changed the battling up in significant ways, considering how far removed from vanilla it is, but it's still basically just competitive battling. Every game having homogenized mechanics is boring.
However, Ash Gray is a weird hack for several other reasons. Like removing Ground's immunity to Electric and just overall weird progression to try and match the anime.

Radical Red still plays within the playpen that Game Freak shat out. The game is way too lopsided towards two outcomes: stall or 2KOs. Battles should be slower but balanced as the gold standard to balance every other situation in the game, you have to break out a graphing calculator and modify the damage/stat formula for that.
Pokémon battles just aren't fun, and competitive has never made them any more enjoyable. You have 4 moves but at any single given point you might as well only have 1, because there's always only 1 good choice. There's never any risk to take, because the outcome of your choice is guaranteed anyway. You could throw in more RNG to make the game less predictable, but people piss and cry about that.
There's a pretty good reason why the best solution to difficulty in this game is to have the AI make their decision after you've locked in yours, as retarded as it is, it's because of how fundamentally braindead the game is.
Abilities, the split, widened movepools, power-up gimmicks, terrain, weather, etc. all weak copes to try to make the game more interesting by giving you more shiny things to look at. All Pokémon ever needed was just a battle system designed by someone that isn't a child and some proper good dungeons. I've never seen a hack attempt this. If you think you have, you probably haven't, and I'm just failing to get my point across, but that's about the best way I can describe the issue.

Maybe that's how it is in hacks, but in PvP (like Showdown/VGC) this is far from the truth. There's multiple options that can be decent that also depend on your opponent's choices. This is why competitive pokemon was able to carve out a small niche for itself.
Of course the problem turns out to be the fact that no one cares enough to try to implement a good AI. I've never played Radical Red but I bet even that AI is incredibly simplistic in how it determines the best choice action.

It should've stayed as just that - an idea. Why would a slug made entirely out of rocks and lava change its entire physiology to its exact opposite - plants - and keep an otherwise identical appearance? It makes no sense. Not to mention, the design itself is very plain and has nearly zero detail except a couple of leaves and some mud. Even the original Slugma is drawn with a detail and specific shape that is lost on this rendition.

I think you need to learn more from the professionals, sister.
Ever wondered why Doom Eternal makes enemies less accurate against moving players? It's because if you stop and stand still, you're dead.
Because if you can stop and shoot, you don't have to think about where you're going, where your foes are and where they will be, what your ammo is... Basically everything that's a part of "The doom dance".

If the "Pokemon dance" is when you actually have to think about what goes into your team and what it does during the battle, think about how you can design Pokemon to discourage bad play and boring play and reward the good play you want to see.

Who are you to decide what 'bad play and boring play' is to a player in Pokemon. Pokemon are given moves in multiple different archetypes suitable for the multiple battle formats so they can be used in multiple ways. If you decide Pokemon x can be used only in y way, then you've removed one of the most interesting parts of Pokemon.

No it's boring because Gen 2 pokemon are really bad outside of a small handful and you are mostly using Kanto mon. I also see no reason to ever start in Kanto, because the Kanto region is so neutered in GSC. There is no adventure in a pokemon game. Changing where you spawn in isn't some groundbreaking thing. It's still just crystal, which still suffers from crystal problems.

You're spinning out to other franchises to make Pokemon seem like something it's not. The game has a lot more to offer than just battling, or just team building. It has a variety of end goals you can accomplish, and not all of them link to battles.
I've said this since day 1 of your shit posting, and you may have culled some of your more obvious wording, but your attitude pervades every thread and makes it easy to tell who you are every time.

I compared a good game that makes you think fast at high difficulty to a franchise that only makes you think at all if you're playing a fangame or romhack at max difficulty.

Game design 101 is forcing the player to have a good time. Removing their ability to play slow and boring or disincentivising it. That is the guiding principle behind game design as a concept. Your idea of a good time might differ from mine. That's ok.

DESU I think my outsider perspective on Pokemon will result in a better game when it's done. Does this fandom actually play 2 gym demos or only finished products? I have about 3 gyms ready to show off.

guys there was this relatively new fan made pokemon game, which I guess it was about darkrai, I thought it was pokemon desolation but I reached a point where I dont think it was this game. What I remember is that at a certain point (maybe the very beginning?) you wake up in a village inside a forest with a lot of mist and as you progress you get an understanding that you are not in the "real" (lol) world but you and all the other people there with you are trapped within a dream/nightmare and I guess you have to find out how to wake up

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure The 7th Stand User did a great job adding strategy beyond "click strongest attack".
You had multiple party members and would often fight a foe who can act more than once per turn, or multiple foes at once.
Status effects were actually useful, especially if they could stop enemies from acting successfully.
Some battles even have gimmicks like "Can't hurt the Stand, can hurt the Stand User".
Would love to see a Pokemon game where targeting the Pokemon User is a viable strategy.
You might even try to win fights by spending less SP, saving it for later, as healing means giving up time (And you're on a time limit! 50 days till Jotaro's mom dies!) or spending money.

Sure it's all rendered somewhat irrelevant by how easy it is to grind forever in the Japan Arcade and rest in your home for free before you enter the main school and have a time limit to deal with when you begin the main plot. But it's still cool.

I'll give an update on what I've done so far. I've basically figured out how to implement custom mazes for any map in rpx. This means that the next few steps involve the following:
1) Figuring out how a tile from the tileset is chosen by the Table matrix.
2) Persisting the changed map so it isn't randomized every time a save file is opened.
3) Implementing the randomizer so it works on multiple save files.
4) Figuring out how to make the mazes a little more interesting.
Once I can figure these 4 things out I can go about making the actual fangame.
If I'm being honest, I'm probably never releasing a full fledged fangame, but this is a nice way to learn about some maze algorithms and procedural generation. I hope to at least get a proof of concept out in the future.

Nah gen 2 is trash. Imagine wanting to play a gen 2 hack that doesn't do the split or add the evolutions the gen 2 mon so sorely need like Honchkrow, Mamoswine, Gliscor, and Weavile. It's sad. I want Johto to be good, the designs are great, the aesthetic is great, the soundtrack is great, it's peak comfy, but it's objectively bad for so many reasons. Even if you discount "le split" and "gym leaders only use kanto mon" it doesn't take away from the fact that out of the 100 new mon, excluding legendaries, there is only like 15-20 of them that are actually worth using and a handful of them are just evolutions of Kanto mon like Crobat and the Eevees. Barely any mon are 500 or higher BST in gen 2. They don't have abilities to make up for how bad they suck. Their stats and typing cuck them because of the no-split. The Essentials AI is shit so it can be hard to make strategies such as setup or status moves work. I've found the best way to make interesting gym strategies is

>come up with unique battle gimmicks - e.g I have one gambling themed gym that randomly chooses the number of pokemon on the player and GL's team randomly beforehand, and another where each of your team fights each of the GL's team in successive 1v1 battles (so first party slot vs first mon, 2nd party slot vs second, etc)

Not doing monotype gyms is also a good standard one, obviously, but I think the terrastalize mechanic has some untapped potential. I always thought it would be used to make Gym Leaders turn their ace into a type that resists their weakness. SV had a few cool concepts itself though, like the Electric Tera Levitate Mismagius with no weaknesses.

Emerald is harder to setup but it's easier to use in the long run and you get to avoid lots of problems inherent to binary hacking.

I haven't dug deep enough yet because I'm uncertain how deep I want to go on handing players control. I think a system where points scale by a few factors is implementable.

I'm also not sure how I want to handle replenishing points. If I do a flat replenish each turn, you get battles full of ebb and flow turns, with fresh pokemon having a large advantage over those already on the field. I think, while a departure from traditional power management, this is a net positive. In 20+ years of pokemon, I have never had issues with running out of PP on moves, so trying to constrain the player by making sequential battles potentially run down their power points (meaning PP is only restored at Pokemon Centers or via items) is something I think doesn't really work with how the game operates. For gods sake, some moves have 30 PP. You are not running out of that move.
It's just the deeper I go, the further I divorce from traditional gameplay. It will be difficult to implement such changes while remaining a "Pokemon" game.

That is a problem even outside of what that anon is trying. PP has always been a bit awkward - they needed to make sure you had enough to get through a route, but still have it be meaningful in situations like a Gym Leader battle. I'm shocked they never locked the player in a route or cave, probably has bad experiences with playtesters getting softlocked with Struggling pokemon or something so they never went that route.
It is an interesting issue - how do you make moves limited from spamming, but not lock your players in? There's just so many variables, trying to hit that target seems foolish in practice when you have 500-1000 Pokemon to account for in any combination of 1-6 in a party with any of 1-4 moves apiece. Definitely a part of the game I've never really had to think about except in the early game when I'm grinding a lvl 4 up and run out of tackles because it's my only move and does 11% damage. It isn't really relevant otherwise, especially with things like Leppa Berries.

From what I saw, XP/Essentials has it but doesn't do exactly what I wanted. It generates a random map statically, but I wanted to do it dynamically.
The endgoal is that every playthrough has entirely different maps.

Shame the developer accidentally overwrote important data in places and broke a lot of things, and it looks like it never will be fixed because the last update was years ago.
IIRC just having electririzer and magmarizer in your inventory and scrolling over them crashes the game. Nothing you can do to fix it.

Focus on character development imo. Many romhacks seem to amp up the stakes with Really Evil teams or some kind of doomsday scenario; all of these suck ass. Messing with the setting too much always seems to take me out of the game-- there's already ton's of potential in the existing "lore", make use of that where you can and try to lean on interpersonal conflict to drive the plot.

The only thing I got loaded up currently is that gold romhack that basically finished up the spaceworld beta into a full proper game, since I was looking forward to that, but aside from that I don't really have a clue which romhacks are the best or keep up with the community

>Rival Variations
Simple hack for Firered/Leafgreen where the game introduces physical/special split and replaces your rival with the PC of opposite gender (Leaf/Red)

Emerald with all pokemon catchable plus physical/special split and new competitive items from later games

>Refined Platinum
All pokemon catchable, plenty of new encounters, difficulty spikes and quality of life changes

Too difficult, I had the same idea where there’s one of each mon and if you don’t catch it in time (time would be unknown to the player and randomized), that a npc can end up having it instead

Maps like that are made by someone who has a title like "Mapper" in a project. It is critical your mapping guy is also a playtester, otherwise you get stuff like this where from a graphical design perspective, I'm sure the guy was going for -something- and nailed it in his head, but the instant you slap a GBA window around it it's just a shitload of areas that look identical and you wind up needing the full map to navigate it. Like low-key you need a fucking strategy guide to not get lost.

In Yellow version, you can catch Pidgeotto as low as level 9 in Viridian Forest, and in RSE, Winona's Alteria knows Dragon Dance at 33 despite not learning it till 40 and Norman's Linoone knows Slash at 29 despite not learning it till 41. Played through original Red recently and there are examples of early evolutions on normal trainers. As early as Mount Moon there is a rocket member with a lvl 16 Raticate; on Route 11 there is an engineer with two Magnemite and a Magneton at lvl 18 along with a youngster with two Rattata and a Raticate at lvl 17; on route 8 there is a super nerd with two Grimers and a Muk at lvl 22; and the list goes on. The route is long, and has a great many areas to traverse. It feels more like Spaceworld than a single route. While the route is large, it is actually pretty linear, with only a few deviations that end fairly quickly. The map is infested with grass, and unless it is four maps stitched together, this means your table of available Pokemon is not nearly large enough to make this feel good by the end. The map goes through every Pokemon biome that isn't desert. The map has various very ugly sections if run in-game. Rock smash locations are VERY far from any map resets, so trying to get rock smash Pokemon will be insufferable.

>building is repurposed
>you get the idea

There’s so many oversights and mistakes this shit company has made that this series needs a complete reboot or at least overhaul to correct all the shit mistakes they keep making

Making a project in Essentials and having what's probably an uncommon problem: I want to display images to use in dialogue, but I'm also using dark maps heavily at the beginning of the game (for a custom lighting system via the Adjustable Darkness Circles plugin).

Very, very rare without modern mechanics like the Fairy type, especially if you want a game that's actually completed.
You might be better off with faithful update games like FR/LG+, which keeps the games pretty normal while offering great features like switching between fire red / leaf green on the same save, and fixing some bugs from the games.
Good luck in your search anon, it's actually kind of a pain to find the combos of features you want because hack makers always have specific cutoffs of what they "won't add" that vary wildly because there's been 9 generations of games with VERY weird shit happening once we hit gen 6. And they also tend to have no notion of paring the Pokedex, so keep an eye on what Pokemon they say are present. If you ask nicely I'm willing to bet some anons here could take a hack you find and cut out any pokemon after Gen 3/4/5 if that is something you like.

open up your project in RPG Maker and go to the "Map" tab. In the "Map Properties" window, select the "Layers" tab. You should see a list of all the layers on your map.

Find the layer that contains your images and click on the up arrow icon to move it up in the layer order. Keep moving it up until it's above the darkness masking layer.

Any hacks with a strong focus on monotype runs/gym management shenanigans ? I've already finished Unbound, Insurgence and RR with monotype runs but I disliked how you had to waste hours crawling through Excel sheets just to find a mon of the right type early on, especially if you wanna do something niche like Ghost or Steel

I'm not familiar with assembly and programing. I'm doing it oldschool, so I need the offset or a tool to change just that (the "Red Version / Blue Version" on tittle screen).
