Regarding fossils in non-Pokeballs, you have options:
You can capture most of the fossils at the wild/dens in SwSh, only ones not available are Sinnoh's.
Some fossils (Sinnoh's are included here) can be caught in GO and then sent to HOME; however their balls are limited only to Poke, Great, Ultra and Premier if caught from a raid.
Remember you can always check HOME's GTS trades and maybe someone is requesting something decent for a non-Pokeball fossil
