In Johto, you witness the remnants of Team Rocket trying to recover after their defeat in Kanto. In Unova, Ghetsis is forced to work behind the scenes after his image is shattered, and Team Plasma abandons their initial promise to save the Pokemon and openly attacks cities.
Seeing how the cities changed over time was nice as well. Driftveil City thrives with the construction of the Pokemon World Tournament, Route 4 is urbanized, and a new tunnel connects Humilau City to Undella Town, making travel easier for everyone. Meanwhile, in Kanto, Viridian is cut down and the Pokemon tower becomes a radio tower.
It's a nice way to see how your actions have had lasting effects on the region you saved, while also experiencing a new adventure as a different character.
I wish Gamefreak would make this kind of game more often, it's more satisfying than getting DLC or third versions.
