Question for people who have played these games all the way through with the exp share OFF:
Is the level curve all right? I know they altered some stuff significantly, but does that make the level curve steeper or easier? I've never played them past slateport, but I remember thinking they felt weirdly easier even without the exp share, not sure why.

It has about the same curve as the original game, without the Exp Share. The Elite 4 are slightly higher level, but this is because there are more trainers in Victory Road.

It's quantifiably easier in that the enemies are about the same as the original RS (read: weaker than those in Emerald) while your Pokemon have access to much, much better movepools.
It 'feels' easier in that you're often babied with frequent scripted heals and are often offered fast travel, in contrast to the exploration/adventure theme of the original game. You don't *have* to use the 700 BST mega legendary they give you halfway through the game, and nothing stops you from backtracking to the last Pokemon Center so that you can deposit it in the PC, but it still has a pretty huge impact on the mood of the game.

I play with exp share off and no items or TMs until the E4. I don't keep track of level curves but I thought ORAS was very easy just like XY. I think Steven's team was the only time I had to put some effort because like usual I had a bunch of shitmons. I'll check my file to see my team and if this thread is still up I'll reply with it. I always find RSE pretty balanced with my playstyle because of the poor move distribution and lack of split. I would not call it challenging and the only time I really suffered was with Wallace's Milotic but I wouldn't call it easy like ORAS. If you really want a challenge in ORAS maybe try being underleveled the whole time by skipping optional battles since I do fight everyone.

Don't conflate RS with Emerald. The former lacks all of the difficultly bumps found in the latter.

I'll never understand the "you just got older" argument when the differences in difficulty are this blatant. Pokemon was never all that difficult but it was never mind numbingly easy. And that's ignoring the infamous Masuda interview that confirms Gamefreak is intentionally making them easier to better compete with the mobile game market.

RS have some elements of challenge that ORAS don’t tho. The improved level up movesets alone honestly make the game significantly easier, a lot of mons are specifically given better moves to deal with the gym leaders than in the originals.

I play the games where i go against every trainer. I didn't use exp share because i would consistently overlevel, which would make the game not fun. I recall playing emerald (on an emulator) and it wasn't as easy as ORAS. Both were fun tho. Turn off exp share, and skip trainer battles if you can (or do em, wtv u want).

It's pokemon, don't expect much, lol

I don't think the games as a whole got easier but I think XY/ORAS are piss easy and I think the attempt to have a level curve that is balanced for xp share off is a HUGE part of that

The games definitely got easier in a variety ways, and while Exp. Share is one of the most obvious, it's not even close to the only one.
When the games give you more power, like with consistent access to Megas or Z-Moves or just general stronger Pokemon, AI obviously won't scale as well. They won't generally use those tools, or they use them in a limited way. They obviously aren't gonna come in with optimized teams either.
Then you have every game trying to cram in 300-400 Pokemon into the main campaign, which just gives you so many options.
And then there's just features that simply make the game easier, like Affection.

I was hoping that if I didn’t use the exp share and did use the obviously OP mons they give you then the game might actually be a little harder. I don’t even want it to be difficult really, I just moreso meant like, if I play with a team of 6 mons through the game will my team be egregiously overleveled? Cause I’ve always much preferred Pokémon gameplay when my levels are roughly on par with or even less than the enemy trainers

Now I remember, they weren't the worst shitmons but I was underleved which is why I had to battle Steven more than once. Impressive that this team didn't struggle until Steven. I couldn't even point to one as an MVP, they all dished out moderate damage and took moderate damage. Nothing to write home about but it was a fun team.

I have played RSE enough times to be familiar with their differences. Any difficulty in Emerald is balanced out by giving you the tools to have a better team with all the improvements to things like breeding and finding items. RS requires more grinding to achieve the same so in my case I end up struggling with a team that is poorly optimized.

It's still piss easy, especially since you get handed free megas like candy. It's more interesting to use the exp. share since it'll let you train up more pokemon and use a wider variety across the game. I didn't use Slugma until I played through OR and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it did
