A great experience if you go out of your way to do every little thing you can, there's a lot of side content of varying types. I'd argue that it's the best Pokemon game in terms of that sort of thing, but I'm more than willing to hear arguments in favor of Emerald or B2W2.
If you just want to play the game and get it over with, it's just okay. You're better off playing Emerald or even Gen 1 if that's all you want. Hell, there's an argument to be made BW is better than HGSS if you play it that way, and that game is cutscene city.

Take it slow and talk to every NPC. If you have friends, see if they'll start with you. And don't expect anything from Johto to be useable.

Meaning the game will punish you for trying to change up your team any later than gym 4 by limiting exp availability through wild pokemon levels.
Unless you go out of your way to grind and constantly track your team, you'll end up with any early pokemon overlevelled, later pokemon underleveled and everything staying that way for the entire latter half (or 3/4 if Kanto is counted) of the game.

? All the wild Pokémon after Gym 4 are in their 20s-mid 20s, and GLs 5-7 are in theie 30s. There's no grinding neccessary. You can add any Pokémon to your team whenever. It's exactly the same as any other Pokémon game.

Professional Pokemon experts have proven time and time again that it's not possible to win unless your whole team is the same level or higher than the next boss's strongest Pokemon. If the boss has higher stats than you then you have to go grind because then your four STAB moves won't do enough damage; there's no other way around this. The old Pokemon games are all really badly designed for this reason.

This is more of a GSC problem. I find that pokemon in HGSS give a lot more exp, the new area of grass outside the Safari Zone for example is a great place to grind. The Goldeen and Seaking between Ecruteak and Mahogany give a surprising amount of exp too.

That's literally why I can't finish gen 5 anymore. Too much dialogue with none of the soul of something like a tabletop game. At least there I have an actual character instead of a blank slate nobody mute and the person making the NPCs talk is my friend, can't do that shit with VRPGs.

Challenge mode is literally broken.
Enemy pokemon don't actually have better stats, they're higher level on paper only which means they're actually weaker than other pokemon of the same level. And because in gen 5 exp is calculated based on level, this means you get more exp than in the regular game while facing relatively weaker enemies.

I used to have this opinion, just finished a playthrough of Platinum and this couldn't be further from the truth. Sinnoh lacks identity, feels bland and the pokemon stink/are just new evos of older and better gens. UI sucks, the fucking item bag takes 7 points off alone. Cyrus and the distortion world is kino though. Plat had no chance competing with HGSS, which has;

Gen 3 came out in 2002. That's 6 or 7 years after Gen 1. At that point, lot of the first pokefags lost interest and moved on.
