Don't be fooled. Every season starts good to great, then they struggle the fuck to do as they stretch content for the next three to four years, especially if they make up shit on their own without game story to put them in line.

They clearly didn't have anything beyond a pitch early on, which is why the focus is so fucked.
Goh originally is a concept that sounds good on paper but is actually completely nothing in practice, hence why they cobbled the most generic goal on him.
Koharu is the same(well besides the good on paper bit, she was literally just "girl") but she doesn't have any grandeur to atleast somewhat hide how flimsy her revision is.

Because it was desperate trash like most of JNs fanservice, but they couldn't even up budget most of the time despite how "big" it was.
In general it doesn't seem like many had much faith in this and just let uncooked trash through.

Eevee was great though. My favorite eevee probably.
And Goh while not the greatest character by himself, was playing an important role of taking the catchemall part on himself, freeing Ash for team shenanigans.

Also, Ash team was pretty good, but they should've made more episodes focusing on members.
Also, not anime achievement, but the fact that we knew genders of every pokemon on Ash's team was pretty based.

Overall Journeys wasn't bad.

Because it was and still (like SM league) a damage control after the Kalos League meltdown.

They should've focus on Ash and his team with Goh being just another side character. And most importantly, if it's a all region shitfest, make it about all of his past teams. Instead off screen shit, make him use his reserves for each match and develop them. Instead of some random Gengar, just give him that Haunter. Instead of a random Dragonite, evolve his Gible or give him back the Larvitar he had, and then in the master 8 have him fight Alain, Steven, Cynthia and then the other zardnigger, each fight is a 6v6 with most of the reserves being used for each different matches, and then in the final match give him the all-stars team of Pikachu-Zard-Sceptle-Infernape-Greninja-Lycanroc or something.

There's a laundry list of reasons, but it's absolute biggest sin was the characters never using their fucking pokemon, the creatures most of us watched this trash for in the first place, and instead whoring out Pikachu worse than they ever had before, which is saying something.
And when they DID start to use the others more consistently, it was far too late in the series and usually ONLY for battling. They did fuck all outside of their pokeballs, and that's always the most fun shit. Them trying to make out Sirfetch'd and Dracovish had this inspiring friendship after interacting for the first time near the end of the series was the lamest shit.
And then you had Goh, who was being primed to have at least some sort of core team with the likes of Flygon, Scizor, Aerodactyl etc but they become background characters almost instantly.

Also, lol at them barely bothering to show off the new pokemon. I don't even care for most Galar ones, but the anime has always been a good way to make a pokemon design come across better. Most of them didn't even get that chance.

It was as focused as any previous series. We knew what the characters goals were early on and they worked towards those goals while also getting a lot of filler between important episodes.

She's boring, but she's not a main character and the writers have said a million times that she was never intended to be important or get as much focus as she ended up getting

Good idea with a solid start, but it shat the bed near the end

Turns out splitting up a series around 3 plot points doesn't end up well. Except for Ash the others ended up very unsatisfying. Chloe even plot went nowhere hell the Eevee didn't even went G-Max, Goh had half the lion share of episodes but his plot started way too late, Ash felt too rush, he should used his reserves and he should have more bonding episodes with his team rather than just Lucario and Pikachu, if things were to go like this it would been better to just cut the filler episodes and use those slots to give more screen to Ash's team or make Project Mew less shitty.
