I'd argue that's probably by design, though, and Charizard/Pikachu/etc only get so much attention because they've already demonstrated their worth as popular, marketable assets. Regardless of whether or not it makes for a good video game, the salt block mon probably won't be seen for another decade while Charizard will continue starring in every game or toy or cartoon for as long as the franchise lasts. If you don't like it at this point you might as well just not like Pokemon.
