Much as I jerk off to it, Scolipede in gen5. It's movepool sucks, and it's only really useful against the dark (TP & E4 member) & psychic (read: elite 4 member) mons you face.

It's actually sad how much Galvantula totally mogs it thanks to Compound Eyes Thunder for the spider to be way better than a huge walking centipede.

Scolipede is as good as Game Freak will ever allow an early route Bug type to get.
Its okay in Gen 5. Not amazing, but it isn't completely useless/underpowered.
But its nothing amazing, regardless.

But being buffed (especially with Speed Boost) in later gens really did help it out.

This dude could not take a fucking hit and Water Compaction was useless because I didn't want to leave him in on a water mon and there are way more special waters than physical waters anyway. He didn't do enough damage and had no utility either, just a total waste of effort to train and he got mogged completely by my Toxapex who I also ran.
Should have gone with Mudsdale or said fuck it and picked up Miltank instead

It just used it in B2. It served well with Megahorn, Rock Slide, Steamroller and something else. Had fuck all for poison moves though so relied on poison point.

It has meh STABs, no good setup moves and isn't actually that bulky if it's not taking resisted hits, and since megas aren't coming back any time soon it'll stay that way unless they give it Shift Gear or something.

I ended up using it as screen support in a grass pokemon only HG run about two years ago.

Screens saved me and my pokemon more than I can count. Grass types are soooo easy to murder for the most part.

Meganium works better in gen 2. Not needing to worry about natures or getting the right EVs lets it do whatever it wants well enough ingame, not to mention the overall powerlevel in general is much lower along with weaker movepools in general so it doesn't have to worry nearly as much about getting kicked around so easily.

The only good way to use Steelix is to use Curse and then spam Gyro Ball/Earthquake and repeat.
It probably deserved an Attack stat boost, but it is already >500BST. Just a victim of an outdated stat distribution. These days it'd probably have 110Attack.

Even if you want to go mixed electric attacker, you either have to waste a precious thunderbolt TM on it or wait until level 56 for discharge. To this day, physical electric types are still a complete joke.

Steelix's BST is only 510. its up there but its not so high that more couldn't be added. For refence Lapras has 535, Snorlax has 540, and Arcanine is 555 (Though Arcanine is probably the absolute limit considering its the Legendary Pokemon). Steelix could get 10-15 added to Attack without being too high.
The sad thing is that Game Freak cared about Steelix enough to give it a mega, bet even then the Mega wasn't too great because it has to compete with the Shillmon megas. Now megas are gone and Steelix is stuck with nothing.

Its good defense is meaningless with having two common 4x weaknesses on top low HP, its too slow even with a shell smash boost, and its special attack stat isn't that good either. Its only real chance at success is to find a spot on trick room teams.

jack up it's defences and HP, let's say at least 30+ on HP and physical defence, special defense might be usable with better HP, i think it does get Stockpile and Amnesia so that's good. Magma Armor grants water immunity. it get's Regenorator instead of weak armor

It used to scare the shit out of me in RSE. The only stuff you could hit it with was Fire or Ground, and I don't remember there being too many good answers to it other than Ttar which had to worry about being hit with a SE move right back. I kind of remember a friend running Charizard to deal with it, but that was in the pre-physical special split days so Charizard had an ass move pool and basically had to hope that Fire Blast would land. Or you could run Moltres/Magmar, but wtf would you do that? I can't really speak to high level competitive too directly though. I just know that Metagross got super fucked over increasingly more so by each generation with the addition of new types, better distribution of moves, and then the removal of Steel's resistance to Dark and Ghost

I really wanted it to be good. I don't remember if I ended up using it all the way through on my playthrough, I think I dragged it along because I just wanted to say that I used it and I loved it so much. It got a stat boost too, not just a better ability, in later games. It has a definite niche, just a shame that they won't give it a better boost. I'm curious if the Generation 5 remakes will revisit it though, because sometimes they do go back and tweak move pools to modernize them (though that also works in reverse and they remove stuff...). I would love to see a move like Steamroller get a rework and then have this thing learn some newer attacks like Ice Spinner (wtf not) or Trailblaze. Learning Coil finally would be cool too. It would have a really cool secondary niche in that case, running that move plus speed boost. Holy shit

Yeah, I recently did the 100 battle tower win streak in Ruby for old times sake, I think Metagross was one of the only NPC pokemon that could even kill Latios (I just did calm minds to sweep majority of the streak), but it admittedly used explosion usually to do it

I had the same experience. Its stats were perfectly designed to die to everything. It's not fast enough to outspeed anything, it's not bulky enough to survive more than 2 hits, and it's attack is split in half so it can't hit anything hard enough. It has a powerful signature move that is absolutely useless because of its stats and never relevant in single player. Its only saving grace is its fantastic design. I still love the paper owl.

Tried using one in Gold but it truly just sucked TOO much.
It was passable at first with Ok attack and speed and immediate access to headbutt, but it fell behind very quickly. It’s bulk is dogshit against anything that’s evolved and it never learns anything better than headbutt. I really wanted to use it for its design but bad stats + bad typing + a god awful movepool is just too much. At least some shitmons have unique gimmicks or learn some useful moves, Yanma is just bad.

I used Octillery in USUM and it was easily the weakest member of my team, despite me also using Masquerain and Arbok, who were both significantly more useful. Turns out a slow frail mixed attacker is even more fucking useless than normal when it's in a game where all lategame enemies are EV trained and have perfect IV's and optimal natures. Almost every time it got outsped and OHKOd and if it somehow lived there were still a lot of cases where it didn't have enough attack to OHKO the opponent.

Ghost has always been terrible. Functions incorrectly in gen 1, and because biting is a common way for animals to defend themselves, gen 2 gave almost everything dark coverage. Plus dark has the same coverage as ghost, leaving ghost with no reason to exist outside of gimmicks.

Overall yeah I agree, but this is also the generation where they just kicked Sneasel/Weavile to the curb.

Losing Knock Off and Throat Chop sucked kinda had. At that point you're left with Night Slash for Weavile, and I think just bite for Sneasel.

Water/Ground is a great type and things like Swampert or Gastrodon have served me faithfully, but Quagsire is such a letdown. Tried to use it several times but I always feel like it just does nothing then dies. There's nearly always a better water type than this guy.

I ended up with a shiny one of these on Renegade Platinum, so it doesn't really count but it was so useless that I just boxed it after half the game of it taking up a slot in my team. Doesn't take hits well and its movepool honestly wasn't stellar, despite 125 base attack I never felt like it was hitting particularly hard.

I think the first tutor is in Driftveil, so near the 5th gym. Thing is, unless you get a Cubchoo from a grotto, it's a winter-only encounter.
Also the shards are alongside like 25 other items that spawn from dust clouds in caves that can take hundreds of steps to spawn each, half of which have enemy encounters.

You could also lose at the PWT. This gives 1 random shard each time so if you feel like losing 40+ times in a row you could "farm" like that.

Yanma is in its own class in GS but Gligar was hard to make work too. I had to breed one just to get it wing attack as an egg move, and it learns NO ground attacks. Not even dig. So without breeding it would have had no STAB and basically would have been a non-stab headbutt user.
