From a gameplay perspective it's very lacking: no real dungeons to speak of, a feeling of content missing, subpar route design, etc. However, from a lore/cultural standpoint, it's the best region in the entire series. The region feels completely unique with a very different culture from the previous regions. The new pokemon as well are very well described how they live there and interact with their environments. The new addition of regional forms that showcase how some pokemon adapted to their new environments was a stroke of genius too.

RR castle and vast poni canyon are good. mount lanakila sucked in SM but was improved upon in USUM

you mean the routes that have trainers, wild pokemon, and other things to backtrack to after obtaining more ride pokemon (equivalent to HMs in older games) and other such optional content just like the routes in any other game in the series?

Alola is one of the best settings in any video game. It's up there with Cyrodiil and the planets in Kotor like Taris for me. These are places with a lot of history, and culture where people live and die.

Sure, if you like barren, same-y wastelands for 80% of the map. It felt too empty. They needed to not be lazy and have you take a door to the top of the volcano, add in more towns…as it stands, it felt desolate to me.

One of the reasons I hated SWSH was because the atmosphere of the region wasn't as great as SM, you had decent locations but there was barely any cohesiveness and just felt slapped on.
Glad SV and PLA brought it back proper but Alola's was still extremely comfy.

Alola had an amazing Pokedex, a good story and great character designs, it's also the last game to have all the Pokemon and the option to turn EXP share off. If Gen 5 was the end of one era, Gen 7 was the end of another.

...And yet I can't fucking play USUM because of all the fucking cutscenes. Literally all Gen 7 needed was a cutscene skip feature, then it'd probably be top 3 generations ever and be a ton of fun to replay with it's boss battles and S tier regional dex, but it's the WORST for replyability because you have 5 hours of mashing the A button and no fan mod has implemented cutscene skip. Tragic.
