This works in octopath because environments are busy and the DoF helps putting your char in focus with the complexity of the environments.
Here it's jaggy blocky and empty and the camera emphasizes on it, which is good because it shows pokemon games are way below video game standards and you're all on lethal amounts of copium

I think this is a good lesson as to why smaller companies are superior to large corporations. You'll never see Game Freak or Nintendo make a game with an interesting art style like this.
