It's a boring design, monotype and meant to play defensively but without the moveset or stats to really back it up, and all of that on top of directly following Venusaur, which did the same thing but better in every way.
Meganium could've been good, but that potential just makes the failure feel worse.

No leech seed as a level up move
You had to breed a meganium with leech seed if you wanted the good meganium experience instead of sticking with your starter, a mistake they refuse to fix

Feraligatr enjoys crunch but it doesn't need it to function well like Meganium, they also gave it crunch at lv 32 in gen4 also got a cool ha in Gen 5

Thyplosion lost special thunderpunch and hasn't recovered though shadowball at least shows GF know it has no movepool

He was my first in Johto, so I like him for that, but he did get fucked by some of the gyms. Always liked grass types. Had the bonus of encouraging a more well rounded team.

>A feminine design in a franchise that targets mainly towards boys
>Even among feminine designs, it goes for cutesy rather than graceful or beautiful
>Is built as a defensive supporter, most people prefer offensive playstyles
>Out of the three staters, has the worst type match ups in its debut games (likely apply to most regions due to how many types grass has a disadvantages against, but it's noticeable in GSC/HGSS due to Johto not copying Rock/Ground/Water gyms like KANTOOOOO and the first two gyms being Flying and Bug, but concern trolls act like Johto having an identity of its own and having the first gym be something other than OHKOing Geodude is "bad game design" when most of those fuckers never gave two shits about Meganium)
>One of the worst Pokemon in competitive history in a franchise because Game Freak care more about giving CHARIZARD special snowflake super saiyan forms it doesn't need than balancing the game

Hey they fixed that mistake once. In SM you can get an Island Scan Chikorita with Leech Seed as its special move. It's a pretty fun option to use there.

Goofy + it's the worst starter by far for gameplay even if they're all kinda mediocre. Typhlosion has Eruption which blows out basically anything it out speeds at neutral + fire typing which is good vs more gyms than the others and Feraligatr has a better defensive typing and an okay offensive one. Meganium is weak to two early game gyms and has no offensive presence compared to the other two.

Not only is it weak against the first two gyms, it's weak against the 4th gym, not very effective against the 6th gym, weak again against the 7th gym, and not very effective against the 8th gym. And it does real poorly against the elite four in general, with the exception of Bruno. This doesn't stop me from using it at least sometimes, but they really fucked Meganium over. Didn't even give the bitch a hidden ability that would make it useful. Rip in peace.
