Over the years I've grown bitter of the Kanto pandering, at the point of rolling my eyes if I see it get some new feature or merchandise. But I want to give it another try. What do you think is the best way to play Kanto? Not Johto+, but just Kanto.

Honestly, FRLG. Its art direction kinda sucks and they didn't do a great job of interpreting the original sprites (landlocked port cities? bridges on top of dirt? two whole tilesets for the whole region?) but it's got a bit more mechanical engagement than the original game and whatever LGPE is.
Not to knock the original RB though, the game is a bit more mechanically basic but the original sprites and chiptune have a lot of charm that newer hardware can't quite replicate.

The version of Kanto in HGSS is the best one - unique tilesets and lighting for each town, distinctive landmarks on each route, and bridges actually on top of water - but it's missing four of the dungeons and is obviously tied to Johto

Let's go is fine, but it's literally made for toddlers and it isn't a 1:1 remake of the original games.

FRLG is...passable but it's held back by gen 3 jank. Get a physical/special split romhack to make it actually worthwhile, maybe look into some of the other available options that improve its flaws.

Even if you can't read the language, if you're at all familiar with Pokemon as a game and how battles/attacks work you can probably get the gist + learn by trial and error if you choose to play in Japanese.

That said even though Red/Blue and/or Red/Green are the original experience obviously, I don't think Yellow is THAT much different the way /vp/ might exaggerate things if for some reason you really want to play that. You'd get mostly the same Gen 1 experience, or at least more so than FRLG or LGPE etc.

Pretty much any Gen 1 variant is probably fine.

It's buggy as hell, and the music is still earrapey garbage. I've played Red, Blue, and Yellow, all on release, never on a virtual console (I skipped the Wii U and 3DS, never had wifi so I didn't have access to the Wii's VC), on original fucking hardware, a gray brick gameboy with the ugly green screen I got from my dad. Speaking of graphics, the sprites in RBG are godawful trash that look nothing like the official art, they're malformed nightmare fuel that's at best flat-out wrong and at worst just a literal animal instead of a pokemon (i.e. pidgey). RBY are not good games, they are objectively bad, flawed, poorly-designed games that only sold well because of the huge marketing push in the west. Unfortunately, you're a retarded manchild who can't take off his rose-tinted glasses for 5 seconds and realize that not everything was better in the past.

This literally lists a ton of bugs and bad design choices that got immediately fixed in Gen 2 and further refined in gens 3 and 4. For example, crits being based on speed was retarded game design which they immediately realized. Toxic turning to normal poison is, in fact, a bug. Focus energy is a bug. Crits ignoring stat-ups is a bug.

That whole thing is just bugs, glitches, and bad game design and reasons why gen 1 is dogshit and should never be played by anyone who isn't a retarded subhuman who can't leave the past where it belongs, in the past.

Except every game that comes after. And the fact that all the official strategy guides list them as 100 base accuracy. If it wasn't intended, it wouldn't be fixed in later games.

I like gen 1 but it's aged horribly and has a lot of QoL issues and some game affecting glitches. It also lacks a lot of enhancements added later, like rebattling trainers and gyms, or having any postgame beyond 1 cave and fighting the same Elite Four repeatedly. Let's Go is also fun but it's hardly a regular Pokemon game. Fire/Leaf are still the definitive Kanto experience.

If you don't want to play FRLG (which granted is a little outdated itself by this point, despite having numerous refinements over gen 1), you could try taking a chance on Radical Red (romhack) or Añil (fangame), both of which offer comprehensively modernized Kanto experiences without cutting major features down like LGPE do. That may or may not be a good thing depending on your opinion of post-gen 5 mechanics, though.

Soul IS why I have a slight preference for Realidea System over Xenoverse, despite the latter being the more polished of the two, but the polish gap between the two games is FAR narrower than it is for RBY vs FRLG.

LGPE has slight merit depending on your preferences. First off, there is that postgame where you train literally every single Pokemon for Master Class Battles. I don't think those should be scoffed at and a very nice advantage is that at the end of that you're going to have Pokemon to transfer to later games that should at the very least be of high levels.
Most people will say FRLG because even though the tileset was questionable for the region and there were some changes to Kanto from gen 1, it is still a very good game with a lot to do. Sevii Islands are pretty cool the first time around for most people, I still think that they are some of the most interesting places in all of Pokemon but I know that's a very strange opinion.
You could also play RBY but I would highly recommend/require that people playing gen 1 play Stadium 1 alongside it to get the most out of it. Playing gen 1 alone just seems like a net negative at this point for your time and even playing gen 2 without Stadium 2 is a better experience. RBY is a mediocre set of games that retroactively offers nothing over other entries in the series if you play it without experiencing Stadium.
